Job description

We are seeking an experienced Fiber Optic Locate Technician to support our outside plant construction, maintenance, and emergency repair operations. This role is responsible for accurately locating, marking, and documenting company-owned fiber optic infrastructure to ensure safe excavation and prevent service-affecting damage.

This is a private/in-house locator position, focused on supporting internal crews and approved contractors-not high-volume 811 ticket production.

Key Requirements
  • Locate and mark underground fiber optic cables, conduits, handholes, vaults, and related OSP infrastructure
  • Use electromagnetic, passive, and tracer wire locating equipment to determine accurate fiber paths and depths
  • Interpret OSP prints, as-builts, splice diagrams, and GIS maps
  • Coordinate closely with construction, maintenance, engineering, and project management teams
  • Perform pre-construction walkthroughs and jobsite verifications
  • Identify discrepancies between field conditions and maps; report redlines and corrections
  • Document locate activities with photos, sketches, and field notes
  • Support emergency fiber restoration efforts as needed
  • Assist with damage investigations and root cause documentation
  • Maintain locating equipment and ensure calibration and readiness
  • Follow all safety standards, traffic control requirements, and company policies
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 1-3 years of experience locating fiber optic or telecom utilities
  • Strong understanding of underground fiber construction methods (direct buried, duct, conduit systems)
  • Experience using locating equipment (EM locators, sondes, tracer wire techniques)
  • Ability to read and interpret fiber maps, splice prints, and construction drawings
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
  • Ability to work independently and outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Strong attention to accuracy, safety, and documentation
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with OSP fiber networks (long-haul, metro, or access)
  • Knowledge of handholes, vaults, splice cases, and duct structures
  • Familiarity with GIS systems, mapping software, or mobile field applications
  • Previous experience supporting fiber construction or maintenance crews
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
  • Damage prevention or utility protection training
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain
  • Ability to work in roadside, easement, and active construction environments
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to bend, kneel, and stand for extended periods
