Assistant Technical Drafting information

What is an assistant technical drafting?

An Assistant Technical Drafting job involves supporting engineers, architects, or designers by creating and revising technical drawings and blueprints. These professionals use computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce detailed plans for buildings, machinery, or other structures. Their responsibilities may also include maintaining drawing files, assisting with project documentation, and ensuring that designs comply with relevant standards. Assistant Technical Drafters play a key role in the design process by helping to turn ideas and concepts into precise technical documents.

What does an assistant technical drafting do?

As an Assistant Technical Drafting professional, your daily tasks will often include preparing and revising technical drawings and blueprints under the guidance of senior drafters or engineers. You may use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed schematics, ensure drawings meet project specifications, and maintain organized records of all drafts. Collaboration is commonβ€”you'll frequently communicate with engineers, architects, and other team members to clarify requirements and resolve discrepancies. This role provides a great opportunity to develop technical skills and gain exposure to larger projects within a supportive team environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant technical drafting?

To thrive as an Assistant Technical Drafting professional, you need a solid understanding of technical drawing principles, attention to detail, and typically an associate degree or certification in drafting or a related field. Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks is standard, along with knowledge of industry-specific standards. Strong communication, time management, and teamwork skills help you effectively interpret instructions and collaborate with engineers or architects. These skills and qualities ensure precise, efficient production of technical drawings crucial for successful project execution.

Assistant Technical Drafting roles typically involve supporting senior drafters by preparing basic sketches and assisting with technical drawings. Drafting Technicians usually handle more detailed and precise drawings independently, often requiring more advanced certifications. Both roles are essential in design and engineering industries, but Drafting Technicians generally have greater responsibilities and technical expertise.

How much does an assistant technical drafting make?

An assistant technical drafter typically earns between $40,000 and $55,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced assistants with proficiency in CAD software can earn higher salaries. Certifications and technical skills can also influence compensation.

Job description

Job Title: BIM Designer / Electrical Revit DrafterJob Description

This role focuses on creating high-quality electrical construction drawings and BIM models for large data center projects. You will use Revit extensively to perform redlines and markups, develop detailed construction documents, and support prefabrication efforts for electrical systems. The position is ideal for someone with electrical construction experience who enjoys technical drafting, 3D modeling, and collaborating with project teams in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities
  • Produce accurate electrical construction drawings using Revit, incorporating redlines and markups from the design and project teams.
  • Create, modify, and maintain Revit families and assemblies for electrical systems and prefabricated components.
  • Assist the prefabrication team in developing shop drawings, including cross-sections of underground installations, conduits, cables, and other electrical systems for fabrication and installation crews.
  • Read and interpret architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical floor plans, sections, and elevations to coordinate and integrate electrical designs.
  • Support 3D coordination efforts by modeling electrical systems and ensuring alignment with other disciplines in the project.
  • Prepare and update electrical construction documents and ensure they are consistent, complete, and compliant with project standards.
  • Collaborate closely with project coordinators and field teams to translate design intent into practical, buildable documentation.
  • Apply field experience and constructability knowledge to improve the accuracy and usability of drawings for installation crews.
  • Maintain a steady pace of high-quality work to meet project deadlines in a fast-moving construction environment.
Essential Skills
  • 1–3+ years of experience in electrical construction or electrical design.
  • Proficiency in creating electrical construction documents, including redlines, markups, and coordinated drawings.
  • Hands-on experience with Revit, with the ability to create and manipulate Revit families and assemblies.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical plans, sections, and elevations.
  • Experience coordinating electrical designs with other disciplines in a construction or design environment.
  • Field experience in electrical construction, with an understanding of how drawings translate to installation in the field.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, buildable documentation.
  • Ability to work at a steady, consistent pace while maintaining high quality standards.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with BIM and 3D modeling for electrical systems.
  • Background as a drafter, CAD technician, or CAD operator in electrical construction or related fields.
  • Familiarity with prefabrication processes and shop drawing production for electrical components.
  • Experience working with blueprints, 3D coordination, and cross sections of electrical systems.
  • Willingness to grow Revit skills further; training may be available for candidates with strong electrical experience and aptitude.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with project coordinators, prefabrication teams, and field personnel.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to integrate feedback into design and drafting work.
Work Environment

This position is based in a fast-paced construction office that emphasizes hard work, accountability, and high performance. Many team members have progressed from field roles into office-based positions, creating a culture that values practical, hands-on experience and constructability. The BIM/design team sits in a quieter area of the office, providing a focused environment for detailed drafting and modeling work. Colleagues are friendly, supportive, and driven, and they expect consistent, high-quality output at a steady pace. Demonstrating the ability to fit well with the team’s collaborative and performance-oriented culture will play a significant role in securing a long-term opportunity after the initial contract period.
