Assistant System Engineer Trainee information

What is an assistant system engineer trainee?

An Assistant System Engineer Trainee is an entry-level position in the IT and software industry, typically offered to recent graduates. In this role, trainees learn about software development, system maintenance, and troubleshooting under the guidance of senior engineers. The position is designed to provide hands-on experience with various technologies and tools used in the company, allowing trainees to develop technical and problem-solving skills. After successfully completing the training period, they may be promoted to higher roles such as System Engineer or Software Developer.

What are the typical responsibilities and learning opportunities for an assistant system engineer trainee?

As an Assistant System Engineer Trainee, your first few months will typically involve a mix of technical training, shadowing experienced engineers, and working on small-scale tasks under supervision. You may assist with system installations, troubleshooting issues, and performing routine maintenance. The role often provides structured learning opportunities such as workshops and mentorship, helping you build foundational skills in system administration, networking, and security. Actively collaborating with team members and participating in group projects will also help you gain hands-on experience and better understand company-specific processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant system engineer trainee, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant System Engineer Trainee, you need a solid grounding in computer science fundamentals, programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), and typically a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with operating systems, version control systems like Git, and basic knowledge of databases and cloud platforms are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help you adapt and contribute within project teams. These skills are crucial for efficiently learning on the job, supporting senior engineers, and delivering reliable technical solutions.

Job description

The age of automation is upon us, so join a company that pushes the limits of innovation. PAR Systems is a world leader in the design and development of cutting-edge automation and control systems for Aerospace, Life Science, and Nuclear markets. We design advanced nuclear fuel handling solutions that demand absolute precision, safety, and reliability. We are seeking an Advanced Verification & Validation (V&V) Engineer to help ensure our engineered systems perform exactly as intended-and that performance can be clearly demonstrated through disciplined testing, documentation, traceability, and audit-ready evidence.
This role is ideal for someone with a strong foundation in V&V, systems engineering, or quality within a regulated industry who is ready to take on greater technical ownership. You will support verification and validation activity planning and execution, analyze requirements traceability, and collaborate closely with engineering, quality, and project teams from design through commissioning.
While V&V will be the primary focus of this role, project needs may occasionally require support for adjacent engineering activities. Depending on your background and experience, you may periodically contribute to mechanical design, controls engineering, or software development tasks when V&V workload allows. This provides an opportunity to stay closely connected to the design process, broaden technical capability, and strengthen the overall quality and testability of PAR's engineered systems.
Success Criteria
Success in this role means delivering verification and validation work that strengthens safety, quality, and customer confidence.
You will help ensure system, integration, and acceptance testing is well planned, thoroughly documented, and completed with no unresolved critical defects. You will ensure clear requirements traceability is maintained from design inputs through test evidence, confirming that every deliverable is accurate, complete, and audit-ready.
You will contribute to V&V process improvements, support compliance with applicable standards such as NQA-1, IEEE, and IEC, and help strengthen consistency across projects. Through strong communication and collaboration, you will work with Engineering, Quality, and Project Management to keep analytical reports and testing activities aligned with technical requirements, schedules, and regulatory expectations.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering or related technical field.
  • 3+ years of experience in Verification & Validation, Systems Engineering, Software Quality, or Quality Engineering in a regulated industry such as nuclear, aerospace, defense, medical device, or similar.
  • Strong understanding of requirements management, configuration management, and requirements traceability.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, structured, audit-ready documentation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across engineering, quality, and project teams.
  • Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and ownership skills to ensure adequate follow-through with multiple interacting tasks.
  • U.S. Citizen due to customer contractual requirements

Preferred
  • Experience supporting software V&V activities in accordance with IEEE 1012, IEEE 829 or similar standards.
  • Familiarity with NQA-1, nuclear quality assurance programs, or other highly regulated quality systems.
  • Experience with automation systems, controls, robotics, nuclear handling systems, remote equipment, or fuel transfer systems.

You've learned about what you'll be doing, here are the benefits you'll gain when you join our team:
  • Global team recognized for their passion of inventing
  • First-of-a-kind product culture and project exposure
  • Training and development from industry-leading experts
  • Cutting edge benefit programs that include: 401(k) & matching; Medical, Dental, Vision Insurance; Disability & Life Insurance; PTO, Paid Holidays, & Parental Leave for both Parents; Tuition Reimbursement

We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin or any other status protected by applicable law. We use AI to assist with sorting applications, but real humans do all the evaluating and deciding. If selected for an interview, please advise our Human Resources department if you require accommodation during the interview or assessment process and we will support your accessibility needs. We offer market competitive pay and benefits based upon the candidate's skills, experience, qualifications, and internal equity. Our starting rate of pay for this salaried position is targeted at $90,000-110,000 annually.
