Job description

Bargaining Unit: EA
Rate of Pay: $27.76/hour + DOE
Summary
Assists the nurse in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of the provider by performing technical services within the scope of practice of the Medical Assistant.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Interviews patients, obtains vital signs, measures height and weight, and documents this information in the patient record.
  • Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients and for special procedures.
  • Drapes patients as needed and positions instruments and equipment.
  • Hands instruments and materials to practitioners as directed.
  • Follows the policy for cleaning and/or processing instruments for sterilization and demonstrates proper sterile technique.
  • Operates medical equipment safely as directed by the supervising physician/designee.
  • Obtains test results as requested by the nurse or medical provider.
  • Operates electrocardiograph (EKG) and other equipment to administer routine non-invasive diagnostic tests.
  • Delivers samples to Lab, collects non-invasive lab samples, and performs routine CLIA-waived laboratory tests as directed.
  • Works as an effective team member.
  • Assists patients with dressing and undressing when donning a medical gown is required.
  • Reinforces patient education materials/instructions approved by the medical provider.
  • Completes all tasks daily as assigned.
  • Assists with the transcription and migration of patient records between electronic medical records (EMR).
  • Obtains prior authorization for medications and treatments as assigned.
  • Enters data into the computer as needed to maintain office and patient records.
  • Maintains par levels of medical supplies and medications. Keeps rooms well-stocked and organized per practitioner preferences. Reviews supplies for outdates per policy.
  • Ensures all outdated supplies, materials and medications are discarded and replaced per policy.
  • Cleans patient care equipment per policy following each patient use. Reports safety concerns to Clinical Supervisor.
  • Cleans and restocks exam rooms and treatment areas after patient visits.
  • Demonstrates System Values in performance and behavior.
  • Complies with System policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience
No educational requirement and 6 months to 1 year relevant experience
Required Licenses/Certifications
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
  • Upon hire

BLS: Employee will be enrolled in the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) Basic Life Support (BLS) Entry or Prep Curriculum (depending on their previous BLS certification).
  • Within 3 months of hire into job

Other Experience/Qualifications
Required:
  • Strong written, electronic and verbal communication skills.
  • A willingness to be trained on-the-job in duties not previously learned is essential.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

Preferred:
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) is preferred.
  • Experience as medical assistant or comparable position in a medical office, medical clinic or hospital is preferred.
  • Certified Medical Assistant or EMT status preferred. All certifications (e.g. Medical Assistant or EMT-1) must be kept valid and current. Compliance with any future change in testing or certification required by California State legislature.
