Assistant Speech Team Coach - Speech Individual Events
Southland College Prep Charter High School is seeking an outstanding, dynamic, innovative Assistant Speech Coach to work with the Head Coach of the Speech Team to prepare students for speech competitions and to accompany the team to tournaments. This position offers a unique and exciting opportunity for a coach to gain invaluable experience with a nationally-ranked speech team and help continue building and maintaining a strong forensics program.
Southland College Prep Charter High School Speech has been a highly ranked forensics team on both the local, state and national level since its inception in 2010. The team has seen rapid growth and development for twelve years having had tournament champions, finalists, and semi-finalists on the local, state and national levels. Southland College Prep Charter High School Speech seeks to offer a comprehensive education to develop students in public speaking, critical thinking and interpersonal skills relevant and critical to their journey of life-long learning. Doing so equips students in mind and character to help them discern their passions and achieve their future goals.
Candidates for this position must be articulate, well-organized and knowledgeable about competitive forensics. The candidate would benefit from having had:
  • A background in competitive speech as a participant and/or coach
  • Organizational skills with the desire and strategy to building and maintaining a competitive high school speech program
  • Strong knowledge of rules and maintenance instructions and procedure of Illinois High School Association (IHSA) speech activities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in giving instruction and constructive criticism in interpretation, public address and/or acting events

Responsibilities/Duties
  • Coach and offer feedback to students on interpretation, public address and/or acting events.
  • Find, evaluate and cut selections
  • Critique speech delivery, interpretation and acting
  • Improve blocking, popping and characterization
  • Research speech topics to guide students in the development, organization and writing of original speeches (i.e. oratory, special occasion speaking, informative speaking, impromptu and extemporaneous speaking)
  • Identify areas of improvement and assist in appropriate drills
  • Attend weekly speech team meetings
  • Travel to judge and chaperone weekly speech tournaments during the speech season (10-12)
  • Supervise speech team members during practice and competitions
  • Schedule and facilitate practices with students
  • Boost team morale and offer tips/advice for students after and before rounds
  • Help students achieve competitive excellence
  • Be available to coach between 10-12 hours per week after school hours
