The department of Otolaryngology has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 3 (E S UAW Research) - Research Audiologist to join their team.
About this Opportunity
Reporting to Dr. Horn, the Research Scientist/Engineer 3 is responsible for compliance, contributing to grant development and peer-reviewed publications, presenting research findings at professional conferences, and mentoring research staff, trainees, and students in research methods and best practices. Through scientific judgment and technical leadership, this position plays a critical role in advancing the Department's federally funded pediatric hearing research program and supporting the University's research mission. The Research Scientist/Engineer 3 - Research Audiologist serves as a scientific investigator supporting NIH-funded research focused on hearing development, speech perception, language outcomes, and auditory performance in infants and young children with cochlear implants. Reporting to the Principal Investigator, this position provides advanced scientific and technical expertise in pediatrics by independently designing, implementing, and evaluating research studies; selecting and adapting research methodologies; analyzing and interpreting complex hearing science clinical and experimental data; and ensuring the scientific integrity of research activities.
The position collaborates with multidisciplinary investigators, clinicians, and external research partners to advance innovative research initiatives, improve research methodologies, and contribute to the development of evidence-based clinical practices.
Key Responsibilities
Research (60%)
Perform clinical procedures including behavioral audiograms, otoacoustic emissions, tympanometry, speech perception testing, and other psychoacoustic measures for research purposes
Recruit subjects through the UW Human Subjects pool as well as in collaboration with Seattle Children's Hospital clinicians as well as clinicians from remote CI centers
Communicate with participants or their caregivers about the research study in person and via phone/email/mailed materials
Obtain informed consent from participants and caregivers
Verify accuracy of research data
Extract and compile statistical data from source documents
Perform statistical analyses, chart/figure prep
Prepare/assist literature searches for grants/manuscripts
Share co-authorship on submitted manuscripts, abstracts
Prepare and/or present posters/presentations at local/national meetings
Train research assistants, medical students, residents or other personnel in psychoacoustic test methods
Administrative (40%)
Maintain longitudinal database of audiologic and medical variables extracted from local medical records and communication with participants
Collaborate on preparing IRB documents and reports
Collaborate on preparing funding agency progress reports
Promote open and effective communication and positive relationships with the research team and collaborators
Collaborate on development of new programs, projects and proposals
Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Audiology, Hearing Science, Communication Disorders, or closely related scientific field, and four years of progressively responsible research experience involving pediatric audiology, cochlear implants, hearing science, or closely related clinical research.

Doctor of Audiology (AuD), PhD in Audiology, Hearing Science, Communication Disorders, or closely related scientific field
Experience with pediatric cochlear implant populations.
Longitudinal clinical research.
SPSS, R, SAS, or equivalent.
REDCap and Epic/Cerner.
Peer-reviewed publications.
Independent scientific research experience.
Experience modifying research methodologies.
Statistical analysis and interpretation skills.
Scientific writing and publication experience.
Knowledge of NIH-funded research and human subjects protections.
Strong collaboration and mentoring skills.
Conditions of Employment:
Flexibility of schedule will be needed in order to fulfill responsibilities of this position to meet deadlines and recruit subjects, including occasional evenings, early mornings, and weekends.Approximately 80% of the work will be performed in person at either IHDD/Bloedel or Seattle Children's Hospital main campus and satellite locations. The remaining 20% will consist of a combination of telework/hybrid work and activities at remote sites.
