Job description

Midwest Veterinary Supply is seeking a Senior eCommerce Developer. This is a remote role; however, candidates must live within local driving distance of our Lakeville, Minnesota Corporate office for monthly team meetings. **No Agencies, please!**

Leading Midwest Veterinary Supply's eCommerce technology initiatives, the Senior eCommerce Web Developer serves as the senior technical resource responsible for the architecture, development, integration, and support of the company's digital commerce ecosystem. This role provides technical leadership for a team of developers while driving backend development efforts. The position balances hands-on development, system architecture, production support, and team mentoring to ensure the continued growth, stability, and scalability of Midwest's digital commerce platforms.

Job Responsibilities

  • Backend Development & Systems Integration – Design, develop, test, maintain, and support enterprise eCommerce solutions within HCL Commerce and related systems. Lead development and integration efforts between HCL Commerce, ERP, Evolve storefront, WordPress, middleware services, payment providers, and third-party applications. Develop APIs, troubleshoot integration issues, optimize performance, and ensure platform reliability, scalability, and security.
  • Technical Architecture & Leadership – Serve as the lead technical resource for the eCommerce development team. Define development standards, review architecture decisions, evaluate technologies, and recommend solutions that align with business objectives. Partner with business stakeholders, IT leadership, and third-party vendors to plan and execute strategic technology initiatives.
  • Production Support & Troubleshooting – Act as the senior escalation point for complex technical issues. Analyze application performance, identify root causes, resolve system failures, and implement long-term solutions. Monitor platform health and support business-critical systems that impact customers, sales, and operations.
  • Mentoring, Code Reviews & Team Development – Provide technical guidance and mentorship to full-stack and front-end developers. Conduct code reviews, promote development best practices, assist with hiring and onboarding, and help build Midwest's internal development expertise as platform ownership transitions from external partners to internal resources.
  • Front-End Development Support – Collaborate with front-end developers on storefront enhancements, customer experience improvements, and React-based application development. Support troubleshooting and integration efforts between storefront components and backend systems when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field. An equivalent combination of education, technical training, certifications, and relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum 7 years of professional software development experience, including at least 3 years supporting enterprise eCommerce platforms and business-critical production systems. Proven experience leading development projects and mentoring technical teams.
  • Strong technical background in enterprise Java development; REST API development; SQL and relational database design; and system integration and enterprise architecture, including ERP integrations, middleware, and service-oriented architecture.
  • Hands-on experience with HCL Commerce / IBM WebSphere Commerce, React and modern JavaScript frameworks, and WordPress development and integrations. Proficient with Git source control, CI/CD and release management practices, and application monitoring tools such as Dynatrace.
  • Demonstrated ability in application troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and supporting complex, integrated technology environments.

Regular interaction with internal and external stakeholders occurs via virtual meetings, email, and phone. Occasional travel may be required for meetings, training, or business-related events. The position typically follows a Monday–Friday schedule; however, additional hours, including evenings or weekends, may be necessary to meet business needs, deadlines, or support critical activities.
