ABOUT BARRINGTON STAGE COMPANY
Barrington Stage Company, an award-winning professional theatre company located in the heart of the Berkshires, is seeking a Set Designer to join our Education team in Pittsfield, MA. This position collaborates as part of the creative team to design a set and pull props with assistance from production assistants who are students.
Barrington Stage has a three-fold mission: to produce top-notch, compelling work; to develop new plays and musicals; and to engage our community with vibrant, inclusive educational outreach programs.

JOB OVERVIEW
The Set Designer is responsible for working with the director and students to design and construct the set and props for the Devised Theatre Ensemble's 2026 summer production. The ideal candidate should have experience working in set design and experience or a strong interest in working as an educator. Good communication skills and the ability to collaborate with both coworkers and students are required. The design process involves meeting the needs of the students and showing before bringing the Production Design Coordinator's own artistic vision to the production, all with a very limited budget.
REQUIREMENTS
  • This role acts as both a professional designer and a teaching artist, guiding student participants through the process of conceptualizing and realizing a physical environment for the stage.
  • Develop a creative scenic and props design that supports the production's needs, remains within the designated budget, and prioritizes the safety of student performers.
  • Actively mentor student interns or volunteers. Demonstrate the design process and involve students in the construction and painting process where appropriate.
  • Lead or supervise the building, painting, and finishing of the set and props, teaching students basic scenic painting techniques (e.g., scumbling, ragging, stenciling).
  • Responsibly manage the education scenic budget, emphasizing the reuse of stock materials as available and creative, low-cost solutions.
  • Attend all production meetings and rehearsals. Maintain a close working relationship with the Director and fellow designers to ensure a unified production aesthetic.
  • Ensure all set pieces are structurally sound and safe for student use. Maintain a clean and organized workspace during the build and install.
