Job description

Job Summary:
A Level 1 Engineer primarily provides support to senior engineers through sales, project, or research & development support. This role is designed to offer hands-on learning while contributing to project success, safety, and overall project coordination. Based on team needs and candidate aptitudes a particular team will be chosen in the interview process for which the candidate will join upon hiring.
Job Requirements:
  • Experience: Experience:0-2 years of qualifying experience in structural or mechanical equipment design, crane operations, rigging, or heavy lifting projects is beneficial but not required.
  • Certifications:Engineer In Training (EIT) credentials preferred but not required
  • Technical Proficiency: Fundamental understanding of engineering principles related to cranes, rigging, and load calculations. Familiarity with the types of cranes, rigging equipment, and materials used in lifting and transporting heavy loads. Ability to assist with basic load calculations and understand weight distribution and lifting capacities.
  • Software Proficiency: Competency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for documentation and reporting. Basic experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software (e.g., AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor) is beneficial.
  • Problem-Solving and Analytical Expertise: Ability to evaluate and optimize lift methodology to increase job efficiency, reduce project costs, and minimize risk exposure to job and personnel. Ability to assist at analyzing and optimizing basic structural and mechanical designs. Ability to adapt to changing design requirements and work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Strong desire to learn and develop technical expertise under the mentorship of senior engineers.
  • Communication: Strong communication skills for reporting, documentation, and communicating with clients or team members. Ability to work effectively as part of a team, collaborating with field personnel, engineers, and project managers. Ability to accurately document and report project details, risk points, lift plans, and changes. Ability to accurately incorporate design revisions and update associated documents for consistency.
  • Project Management Skills: Strong organizational and time management skills to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Ability to assist in the development and updating of project schedules to ensure timely completion. Basic understanding of cost estimation processes for heavy lift projects.
  • Physical Requirements: Willingness and ability to visit job sites regularly and work in outdoor and potentially hazardous environments, which may involve standing, walking, crawling, climbing ladders or scaffolding, and lifting moderate weights.
  • Fit for Duty: Must pass a drug test, fit for duty and background check.

Job Responsibilities:
Sales Engineer
  • Assist Barnhart Sales Team by developing innovative heavy-lift/heavy-transport solutions and proposal material.
  • Perform jobsite walkdowns with Barnhart Sales lead as needed to obtain information needed for solution development and/or to improve customer relationship.
  • Assist in identifying and managing operational risk in line with industry regulations (e.g., OSHA, ASME).
  • Contribute to estimating the costs associated with project execution.
  • Determine appropriate equipment selection for a given opportunity. Selection factors to consider include capacity, availability, constructability, and ancillary costs to project.
  • Assist in the creation and delivery of technically focused sales content both internally and externally. Examples of technical focused content include customized presentations, preliminary equipment layouts, and whitepapers on common rigging methods.
  • Aid Barnhart Sales Team in the proposal creation process.
  • Assist in determining external costs associated with a proposed concept or method statement.
  • Develop technical skills related to crane operations, rigging, and project engineering under the guidance of senior engineers.

Project Engineer
  • Support senior engineers in creating lift plans, including crane selection, rigging configurations, and lifting procedures.
  • Help with basic load calculations and structural analysis to ensure safe lifting operations.
  • Aid in identifying and sourcing cranes, rigging equipment, and materials required for projects.
  • Develop technical skills related to crane operations, rigging, and project engineering under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Assist in preparing and organizing project documentation such as lift plans, inspection reports, and operating procedures.
  • Track project timelines and report progress to senior engineers or project managers.
  • Contribute to estimating the cost of crane operations, rigging, and equipment rentals.
  • Provide on-site technical assistance during lifting and rigging operations to ensure lift plans are followed correctly.
  • Assist in identifying and managing operational risk in line with industry regulations (e.g., OSHA, ASME).
  • Participate in site inspections and identify potential hazards or safety risks.
  • Work alongside crane operators, riggers, and engineers to support day-to-day project operations.

Communicate with clients and project managers to clarify requirements and relay project status updates.Design Engineer
  • Support senior engineers in creating design packages including fabrication drawings, calculations, specification sheets, operation manuals, test certificates, etc.
  • Gain an understanding of industry regulations and standards (AISC, ASME, OSHA) and help ensure designs are in accordance.
  • Help to create 3D models and technical drawings for equipment assemblies.
  • Prepare technical specifications, operating instructions, and maintenance requirements for newly designed equipment.
  • Obtain working knowledge of existing Barnhart heavy lift and specialty rigging equipment.
  • Contribute to estimating the cost of design, fabrication, and testing for various design projects.
  • Assist in identifying and managing operational risk in line with industry regulations.
  • Work alongside field personnel such as crane operators, riggers, and fabricators to support day-to-day project operations.
  • Assist in identifying minor technical issues on-site and work with senior engineers to resolve them.
  • Develop technical skills related to crane operations, rigging, and design engineering under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Support senior engineers in designing and building Barnhart's core equipment for use in the heavy lift and transport Industry.
  • Obtain working knowledge of existing Barnhart heavy lift and specialty rigging equipment.
  • Develop technical skills related to crane operations, rigging, and heavy haul projects under the guidance of senior engineers.

Research and Development Engineer
  • Assist in preparing documents such as fabrication drawings, calculations, specification sheets, operation manuals, test certificates, etc.
  • Support in developing load test plans and participate in the setup and execution of the tests.
  • Provide on-site technical assistance during lifting and rigging operations to ensure equipment is being used properly.
  • Gain an understanding of industry regulations and standards (e.g., OSHA, ASME) and help to ensure designs are in accordance.
  • Work alongside field personnel such as crane operators, riggers, fabricators, and shop technicians to support various activities.
  • Create organized equipment packages for equipment.
