Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Ph.D., Ed.D, or equivalent academic terminal degree and five (5) years of full time experience with increasing administrative responsibility in student success or academic advising at a college or university or Master's degree and eight (8) years of full time experience with increasing administrative responsibility in student success or academic advising at a college or university.
Preferred Qualifications:
Professional experience at an AAU or large public research university. Demonstrated ability to use data to inform strategic decision-making and planning. Demonstrated ability to manage organizational change. Experience in budget management and planning. Professional or scholarly activities represented by conference participation, grant writing, publishing, or public engagement. Experience interacting with a diverse student population in an academic environment.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Assistant Provost provides strategic leadership for high-impact initiatives that advance the mission and priorities of the Division of Undergraduate Education. The Assistant Provost leads the planning, implementation, and assessment of cross-functional projects and special initiatives that strengthen undergraduate education and improve organizational effectiveness. Working collaboratively with leaders across Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Enrollment Management, and other academic and administrative units, the Assistant Provost develops ambitious, mission-aligned solutions for emerging opportunities and challenges.
As a senior leader within the Division of Undergraduate Education, the Assistant Provost represents the division on university committees and strategic initiatives, builds partnerships across the institution, and leads complex projects from concept through implementation. The Assistant Provost promotes a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and evidence-informed decision-making by leveraging data, assessment, and best practices to guide strategy, support transformational change, and enhance the student academic experience at Stony Brook. The successful candidate must be able to listen and communicate effectively and collaboratively; be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and solution-focused; delegate effectively and provide strong mentoring to large teams; and be willing to think creatively and flexibly across complex processes.
Strategic Leadership:
- Provide overall vision and short- and long-term strategic direction for central services within the Division of Undergraduate Education.
- Assist the Senior Associate Provost with developing, executing, and monitoring strategic priorities for the division.
- Translate university strategic goals into cohesive divisional operational plans, resource strategies, and measurable performance metrics.
- Lead the development, evaluation, and refinement of divisional services, policies, and practices to ensure operational excellence.
- Prepare and deliver reports on divisional outcomes, operational challenges, and strategic initiatives for senior leadership.
- Build and sustain strategic partnerships across academic colleges, enrollment management, student affairs, institutional research, and other campus units.
- Represent the Division of Undergraduate Education on university-level committees, task forces, and policy panels.
- Represent the division and increase visibility in professional higher education organizations and national conferences.
Special Projects and Program Development:
- Oversee special projects, initiatives and grant-funded programs that advance the mission and priorities of undergraduate education.
- Lead project management efforts from concept through implementation and assessment.
- Drive the integration of high-impact educational practices-such as undergraduate research and other experiential learning into retention-focused strategies.
- Support the strategic alignment and seamless integration of special programs into broader divisional culture, operations, and long-term priorities.
- Serve as the primary liaison across academic departments, administrative units, and schools/colleges to coordinate complex projects impacting undergraduate outcomes.
- Partner across academic and administrative divisions to identify emerging higher education trends and lead change management efforts toward enhancing the undergraduate student experience.
Management and Divisional Operations:
- Provide oversight for central services operations.
- Supervise and mentor unit-level directors and support personnel.
- Set and evaluate performance goals for direct reports, including training plans and professional development.
- Oversee budget planning and management.
- Assist with the alignment of fiscal resources with strategic vision.
- Pursue external funding opportunities, including grants and philanthropic support where appropriate.
Other duties and projects as assigned and appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:
This is a Management Confidential position. This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
