Assistant Project Manager Internship information

What is an Assistant Project Manager Internship?

An Assistant Project Manager Internship is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in project management. Interns typically support project managers with planning, coordinating, and overseeing various aspects of a project, such as scheduling, budgeting, and communication among team members. The role provides practical exposure to real-world projects, allowing interns to develop essential management and organizational skills. It also helps them build professional networks and better understand the project management field, preparing them for future full-time roles.

Is $20 an hour good for an intern?

For an Assistant Project Manager internship, $20 an hour is generally considered competitive, especially for entry-level or internship roles that may not require extensive experience. Interns often earn lower wages than full-time employees, but this rate can vary based on location, industry standards, and the complexity of tasks involved. It is important to consider the internship's learning opportunities and potential for future employment when evaluating pay.

What types of tasks and responsibilities can I expect during an Assistant Project Manager Internship?

As an Assistant Project Manager Intern, you'll typically support project managers with organizing schedules, tracking project progress, preparing reports, and coordinating meetings. You may also assist in communicating with team members, clients, and vendors to ensure that project milestones are met. This role offers valuable exposure to project management software, budgeting, and risk management practices. Interns often have the opportunity to collaborate with cross-functional teams and gain hands-on experience managing small project components, which is excellent preparation for a full-time project management role.

What is the difference between Assistant Project Manager Internship vs Project Coordinator?

AspectAssistant Project Manager InternshipProject Coordinator
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in construction, engineering, or related fieldsOften similar, with some roles requiring a degree in business or related fields
Work EnvironmentInternship setting within construction or engineering projects, supervised by project managersOffice and site-based roles supporting project teams
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in construction, engineering, and infrastructure industriesCommon across various industries including construction, IT, and manufacturing

While both roles support project teams, an Assistant Project Manager Internship is a temporary learning position for students or recent grads, whereas a Project Coordinator is a more permanent role focused on coordinating project activities and schedules.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Assistant Project Manager Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Project Manager Intern, you need foundational knowledge in project management, organizational skills, and a relevant academic background such as business or engineering. Familiarity with project management tools like Microsoft Project, Trello, or Asana, and basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite are often expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and time management skills help interns excel in supporting project teams and coordinating tasks. These abilities are crucial for ensuring projects run smoothly, deadlines are met, and effective collaboration occurs within the team.

How to become an assistant project manager with no experience?

To become an assistant project manager with no experience, focus on gaining relevant skills such as communication, organization, and basic project management tools like MS Project or Excel. Pursuing a related bachelor's degree and obtaining certifications like CAPM can also improve your qualifications, and internships or entry-level roles in project coordination can provide practical experience.

Can an intern be a project manager?

An intern in an Assistant Project Manager internship typically does not hold the full responsibilities of a project manager, as the role is designed for learning and skill development under supervision. While interns may assist with project tasks, the position of project manager usually requires experience, certification, and authority to lead projects independently.

How to get a project manager internship?

To secure a project manager internship, candidates should have strong organizational and communication skills, often demonstrated through relevant coursework or prior experience. Applying to companies with internship programs, preparing a tailored resume, and showcasing familiarity with project management tools like MS Project or Trello can improve chances. Some internships may require pursuing or having completed related certifications such as CAPM or PMP.

Job description

We are currently seeking an Assistant Project Manager to join our team in Stamford, CT. The Assistant Project Manager will help keep the project team aligned around key priorities, including budget management, scheduling, quality, safety, diversity goals, document control, subcontractor coordination, and client service.

You will work closely with project managers, superintendents, project engineers, subcontractors, vendors, architects, engineers, and clients to help ensure the project is delivered with the level of excellence, professionalism, and care that Dimeo is known for.

What You’ll Do

  • Support the Senior Project Manager and Project Manager with day-to-day project operations, including schedule, financials, safety, quality, diversity, and overall project goals.
  • Help coordinate and communicate with project team members, including Project Engineers and Assistant Project Engineers, to support strong team performance throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Assist with project budget tracking, cost reporting, projections, allowances, contingencies, options, labor cost coding, and monthly requisitions for owners and subcontractors.
  • Support the preparation, review, and administration of subcontractor scope outlines, agreements, and related project documentation.
  • Coordinate with field teams, subcontractors, vendors, clients, architects, and engineers to help resolve issues and keep work moving forward.

  • Help verify existing project conditions and incorporate findings into schedule, logistics, scope, and planning efforts.
  • Support the development, maintenance, and accountability of project reporting tools, including the Operations Report.
  • Assist in the execution of Dimeo’s Quality Management Program and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Program.

How You’ll Work

At Dimeo, project success depends on an integrated team approach. The Superintendent leads key field priorities such as schedule, quality, safety, and logistics, while the Project Manager leads financial management, technical resolution, and project administration. The Assistant Project Manager helps connect these efforts by supporting communication, organization, follow-through, and alignment across the team.

You will be expected to bring a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset; communicate clearly and professionally; and approach each interaction as if you are working directly with a client. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys learning, taking ownership, building strong relationships, and contributing to a team that takes pride in doing the right thing.

What We’re Looking For

  • Knowledge of construction management, engineering, and related construction activities, terminology, and processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret specifications, drawings, and project documents to support planning, coordination, and execution.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills with the ability to work effectively with internal teams, subcontractors, vendors, clients, architects, and engineers.
  • Ability to support cost management, schedule coordination, documentation, meeting preparation, and issue resolution.
  • A commitment to safety, quality, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
