What is an assistant programmer?

Assistant Programmers are entry-level professionals who support the development, testing, and maintenance of software applications. They typically work under the supervision of senior programmers or software engineers, helping to write code, debug programs, and document software processes. Their main role is to assist with routine programming tasks and learn industry best practices, making this position a common starting point for a career in software development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant programmer?

To thrive as an Assistant Programmer, you need foundational knowledge in programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), software development fundamentals, and typically a degree or coursework in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), integrated development environments (IDEs), and debugging tools is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with team members and deliver quality code. These skills and qualities are crucial for efficiently supporting software projects and ensuring reliable, maintainable applications.

What are some typical challenges faced by assistant programmers when joining a new development team?

Assistant Programmers often encounter challenges such as adapting to the team's coding standards, learning new tools or frameworks, and understanding the existing codebase. It can also be a learning curve to effectively communicate with senior developers and contribute to collaborative projects. However, most teams provide mentorship, documentation, and code reviews to help new team members integrate smoothly and build confidence in their technical and interpersonal skills.

What is the difference between Assistant Programmer vs Junior Developer?

The position also provides ongoing shop floor support of non-conventional machining and related processes.

The ideal candidate is a proactive Manufacturing Engineer who will own product manufacturing from development through project completion. A successful candidate in this position will be responsible for developing conventional machining processes for engine ran and new power generation turbine components. The position also assists in shop floor execution, performs data analysis to drive process improvement, and interacts with Product Engineering departments to address non-conformances and opportunities to improve design manufacturability. Our Programmers are expected to work collaboratively with other Manufacturing Engineers, Fixture Engineers, CMM Programmers, and Set-up Operators on a daily basis in these efforts.

  • Determine appropriate cutting tools, fixturing, and machines for optimized machining approaches to complex, multi-axis milling production of rotating blades and stationary vanes components.
  • Complete the development and implementation of manufacturing CNC programs for complex machining processes for multi-axis milling machines.
  • Support in the development of Manufacturing Quality Control Plans / Part Inspection Plans.
  • Support shop machinists to successfully execute manufacturing processes and complex machining activities.
  • Assist and provide direction for design and development of fixturing for machining processes.
  • Design specialty cutting tools for precision form milling.
  • Collaborate with management, product engineering, peer engineers, and operators to realize high quality, stable processes for complex, conventional machining production of rotating blades and stationary vanes components.
  • Project leadership of development and qualification projects (scheduling, design of experiments, experimentation, reporting, documentation) with full responsibility for due dates, results and costs associated with your field of activities.
  • Review in-process product quality control information (manual and CMM dimension checks) and work with production personnel to adjust production run machining processes.
  • Work with production personnel to implement, troubleshoot, and improve machining and associated processes.
  • Collaborate with Quality Engineer to conduct Root Cause Corrective Analyses.
  • Communicate with customers to understand requirements and communicate process deviations (NCRs).
  • Lead continuous process improvements (analysis, solution finding, implementation) around machining processes and methods. Perform and assess manufacturing data to determine opportunities for improvement and lead teams to successfully implement changes.
  • Support quoting efforts by providing cost estimates.
  • Review tooling inventory and adjust stocking levels based on production run usage.
  • Lead and support CAPEX projects and ROI calculations.

What You Will Bring:

  • 2–4 year degree in related Engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years relevant and proven 4- or 5-axis milling manufacturing experience.
  • Skilled in interpretation of product and manufacturing drawings and specifications.
  • Skilled in the use of Siemens NX & Teamcenter CAD/CAM systems and product data management systems.
  • Knowledgeable in 4- and 5-axis milling machining processes.
  • Knowledgeable in programming, online and offline, of conventional milling machines.
  • Expert knowledge in parametric model definition tools of NX and assembly modeling with interpart linking.
  • Knowledge in designing component fixtures related to milling machining processes.
  • Skilled in interpretation of product and manufacturing drawings and GD&T specifications.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (Project, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook).
