Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate education, with a strong emphasis on teaching design studios alongside lecture and seminar courses in architectural theory and related areas. Candidates are expected to develop a sustained program of research and/or creative scholarship that advances the mission of the School of Architecture and contributes to the intellectual and professional status of a Carnegie R1 (Very High Research) university.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the School's teaching, research, and service mission through the following responsibilities:
- Teach undergraduate and graduate design studios as a core component of the architecture curriculum, integrating design inquiry with theoretical, social, environmental, and/or technical perspectives.
- Contribute to required and elective courses in architectural theory and related areas, with opportunities to engage questions of design, human and environmental well-being, sustainability, and the broader social and cultural contexts of architecture.
- Develop and sustain a program of research and/or creative scholarship with a clear trajectory and potential for national or international impact.
- Participate in service to the School, College, and University, including interdisciplinary collaboration across allied fields such as landscape architecture, interior design, and planning.
Area of Emphasis
We seek a candidate whose work engages architectural theory in relation to design, with an emphasis on the ways theory and design can serve as mutually informing modes of inquiry. We welcome a broad range of perspectives on architectural theory, including disciplinary analysis and theorization of buildings, as well as approaches that situate architecture within broader social, political, cultural, or environmental contexts.
While the School welcomes a broad range of research and teaching interests, it is particularly interested in applicants whose work explores how design can contribute to human and environmental well-being, broadly defined. Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to, healthy and resilient communities, health-focused urbanism, innovations in healthcare environments, housing affordability, sustainable design, environmental stewardship, spatial equity, and adaptive and regenerative design. We also welcome approaches that examine the social, cultural and political dimensions of architecture and the role of design in addressing contemporary challenges.
Required Qualifications
- Professional degree in architecture (M.Arch or international equivalent) or a related field
- Demonstrated capacity for excellence in design studio teaching
- Evidence of an active research or creative practice agenda in architectural theory and design

Department Information
The SoA is the only NAAB-accredited architecture program in the North Texas region and has a long-standing commitment to design excellence, critical inquiry, and professional preparation. The School serves a diverse and dynamic student body, including a significant population of first-generation college students, and supports a faculty engaged in interdisciplinary research, professional practice, and creative work.
With more than 50 years of architectural education, the SoA is one of the largest architecture programs in the country, with more than 1,100 students. The School offers a comprehensive range of programs, including the Bachelor of Science in Architecture; the Bachelor of Science in Interior Design, accredited by CIDA and NASAD; the NAAB-accredited Master of Architecture; and the Master of Science in Sustainable Design and Technology.
In a metropolitan region rich with possibilities for research, creative practice, and cultural exploration, the SoA maintains strong ties to the large professional design community of Dallas and Fort Worth, the fourth largest metro area in the country. The SoA has an established record as a design school with noted strengths in the aeras of making, fabrication, design communication, community-engaged design, and design-build.
The SoA is home to several active and large student organizations including the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), Latinos in Architecture (LiA), NOMAS (National Organization of Minority Architect Students) and Tau Sigma Delta (TSD), Interior Design Student Group (IDSG).
The College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs offers extensive resources for hands-on design, making, and fabrication through its Community Design-Build Lab, Wood Shop, and FabLab, with advanced woodworking and prototyping equipment, CNC fabrication, 3D printing, laser cutting, digital modeling and simulation, casting, and full-scale assembly capabilities. CAPPA has also recently established two advanced research facilities focused on emerging technologies and architectural innovation: the Performative AI Studio , which integrates generative AI, performance simulation, immersive visualization, computer vision, and robotic fabrication, and the Architectural Robotic Construction (ARC) Lab, which features advanced robotic 3D-printing technology for full-scale concrete construction. Together, these facilities provide faculty and students with a comprehensive environment for material exploration, digital fabrication, AI-driven design, robotics, and advanced architectural making.
Along with the School of Architecture, CAPPA includes the Program of Landscape Architecture, offering the MLA and the Bachelor of Science of Sustainable Urban Design, and Department of Public Affairs and Planning. CAPPA institutes have forged numerous partnerships throughout the DFW Metropolitan area and include Arlington Urban Design Center (AUDC), Center for Metropolitan Density (CFMD), David Dillon Center for Texas Architecture (DDC), and Institute of Urban Studies (IUS).
