Job description

Title: Press Operator II/Web Pressman II

Job Classification: Hourly, Non-exempt

Department: Offset Printing

Reports To: Pressroom Manager

1st Shift: 6 am -2:30 pm Monday - Friday

2nd shift: 4pm - 4am Monday - Wednesday

General purpose of Job: The Web Pressman II operates and supports web printing presses with limited supervision. This role is responsible for performing press setups, makeready, and production runs while maintaining quality, safety, and efficiency standards. The Level II Pressman demonstrates solid technical knowledge of press operations and actively supports training and mentoring of Level I employees.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Operate assigned sections of web presses during production runs
  • Perform press setup, makeready, and changeovers according to job specifications
  • Load and thread paper webs, adjust tension, registration, and ink flow
  • Monitor press performance and make routine adjustments to maintain print quality
  • Troubleshoot common press issues and escalate complex problems as needed
  • Ensure printed product meets customer and internal quality standards
  • Monitor color, registration, density, and overall print appearance
  • Pull, inspect, and approve press samples at required intervals
  • Make corrective adjustments to minimize waste and downtime
  • Accurately document quality checks and production data
  • Follow all safety procedures, lockout/tagout practices, and PPE requirements
  • Perform routine press cleaning and basic preventive maintenance
  • Identify and report mechanical or safety concerns promptly
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe pressroom environment
  • Support and guide Web Pressman Level 1 employees during shifts
  • Assist with on‑the‑job training and skill development
  • Communicate production status, issues, and handoff information clearly
  • Work collaboratively with maintenance, quality, and finishing departments
  • Meet production schedules and efficiency targets
  • Assist in reducing waste, downtime, and rework
  • Follow standard operating procedures and contribute improvement ideas
  • Support lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Any other duties assigned by supervisor

Performance Measurement: Performance feedback will take place both verbally and written on a day-to-day as needed basis, recognition in monthly employee recognition meetings, formal training on changes in SOP as needed with a formal review by the supervisor at least annually

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED. Demonstrated experience as a Web Pressman Level 1 or equivalent. Working knowledge of web press components and controls. Ability to read job tickets, specifications, and quality standards. Strong mechanical aptitude and problem‑solving skills. Willingness to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and overtime. Experience with color control systems and registration tools. Familiarity with preventive maintenance practices. Experience training or mentoring less‑experienced operators

Language and Math Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on -one and small group situations to other employees of the organization.

Physical Demands:

Often standing or walking, may climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Often lift up to 40 lbs & sometimes up to 70 lbs. Use hands to finger, handle or feel. Reach with hands and arms. Vision requirements are close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, & ability to focus.

Work Environment:

Work near moving mechanical parts, fumes & air borne particles, risk of electrical shock, and exposure to toxic chemicals. The noise level is moderate to loud.
