Role Overview

The Assistant Plant Supervisor supports the Plant Supervisor in overseeing daily manufacturing operations, workforce productivity, safety compliance, quality performance, and equipment utilization. This position plays a key leadership role in ensuring production schedules are achieved while maintaining ASC's high standards for safety, workmanship, and operational efficiency.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on manufacturing leader with strong knowledge of fabrication and welding operations, excellent communication skills, and the ability to effectively coordinate personnel, materials, and equipment to support plant goals. This role serves as a critical resource for maintaining day-to-day operational continuity and supporting employee development throughout the facility.


Key Responsibilities

Production Support & Daily Operations

  • Ensure all safety, quality, training, and manufacturing processes are consistently followed throughout the facility.
  • Provide daily oversight and leadership to maintain workforce coverage, productivity, and operational efficiency across all shifts.
  • Perform tank testing and ensure all required testing documentation is accurately completed and maintained.
  • Operate overhead cranes safely to move tanks, assemblies, materials, and production equipment.
  • Assist with completion of quality assurance inspection sheets and ensure documentation deadlines are met.
  • Monitor proper use and safe operation of welding equipment, cutting equipment, grinding tools, cranes, forklifts, and other production machinery.
  • Maintain productivity levels across all teams and monitor progress toward production schedules and completion dates.
  • Ensure employees have the required tools, materials, drawings, and equipment necessary to avoid production delays.
  • Provide hands-on support to welding and fabrication teams as operational needs require.
  • Verify all work is completed according to approved drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Assist in resolving production issues and escalating concerns to leadership when necessary.
  • Support production scheduling and workflow coordination to maximize operational efficiency.

Safety Leadership

  • Conduct routine inspections of cranes, chains, slings, straps, forklifts, controls, and other equipment to identify defects or safety hazards.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment by enforcing housekeeping and designated cleanup procedures.
  • Ensure all employees wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and comply with company safety requirements.
  • Verify equipment operators maintain required certifications for forklifts, cranes, aerial lifts, and related equipment.
  • Reinforce all company safety policies and expectations, including workplace conduct standards and operational safety procedures.
  • Partner with leadership to investigate incidents, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.

Maintenance & Equipment Oversight

  • Support completion and submission of preventative maintenance documentation and quarterly maintenance reports.
  • Ensure daily equipment inspections and operational checklists are completed accurately and on time.
  • Report equipment failures, maintenance concerns, and safety issues immediately to the maintenance team.
  • Monitor the condition and availability of welding machines, plasma cutters, power tools, lifting devices, cords, and related equipment.
  • Assist with equipment utilization planning to minimize downtime and maintain production continuity.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Review drawings and prepare material requisitions and order forms as required.
  • Complete calculation sheets and production documentation for metal cutting, fabrication, and bending operations.
  • Attend production and operations meetings when the Plant Supervisor is unavailable.
  • Ensure employees accurately clock into assigned jobs for labor tracking and production reporting.
  • Review job packets and assist with project documentation, job costing, and production records.
  • Maintain accurate production, quality, safety, and training records.
  • Support communication between production teams, supervisors, maintenance personnel, and leadership.

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of manufacturing, fabrication, welding, or industrial production experience.
  • Previous supervisory, lead, or team leadership experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of metal fabrication processes, welding operations, and shop production environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, foreman reports, gauges, and material tags.
  • Strong understanding of quality standards, manufacturing procedures, and production scheduling.
  • Experience operating overhead cranes and familiarity with industrial lifting practices.
  • Ability to train new employees, assess skill levels, and provide coaching and performance feedback.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, safety procedures, and PPE requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and PowerPoint, strongly preferred.
  • Experience with QuickBooks and production reporting systems is helpful.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to work overtime, weekends, or travel as business needs require.

  • Ability to regularly lift up to 25 pounds, frequently lift up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and other industrial equipment as authorized and required.
  • Required use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and compliance with all safety requirements.
  • Ability to inspect equipment, materials, and finished products throughout the production process.
