Job description

Job Title

Assistant Operations Manager

Company Overview

Pawsitive Dawg Walking and Pet Sitting is a force-free, fear-free pet care company serving Waltham, Massachusetts and nearby communities. Since 2012, the company has built its reputation on dependable service, exceptional pet care, and a genuine commitment to the wellbeing of pets, clients, and team members. This role will help strengthen day-to-day execution while supporting the company's continued growth.

The Opportunity

This is a strong next-step role for someone who can lead operations, coach people, and still stay connected to the real work in the field. The Operations Manager will oversee team leaders, coordinators, and specialists while also providing pet care visits, stepping into urgent coverage needs, and helping maintain service quality firsthand. For the right person, this is a career move into broader leadership, systems improvement, and team development within a growing pet care business.

What You'll Do

  • Lead day-to-day field operations across the business, ensuring team leaders, coordinators, and specialists are aligned, accountable, and supported.
  • Oversee staffing, scheduling, service coverage, and workflow execution so visits are completed reliably, safely, and to company standards.
  • Provide direct in-the-field pet care visits, including dog walking, pet sitting, and other client services, while modeling force-free, fear-free handling and strong documentation practices.
  • Coach and develop team leaders and staff through regular feedback, problem-solving, and performance support.
  • Partner in hiring, onboarding, and training efforts to help bring in strong team members and set them up for success.
  • Improve systems, communication, and processes that make the operation more efficient, consistent, and sustainable as the company grows.

What Success Looks Like

  • Within the first 6 months, daily operations are running with stronger consistency, fewer service gaps, and better communication across the team.
  • Team leaders, coordinators, and specialists are receiving clear direction, timely coaching, and stronger accountability.
  • Hiring, onboarding, and early training processes are better coordinated, with new team members becoming productive faster and with more confidence.
  • Clients experience smooth service, responsive communication, and continued trust in the quality of care.
  • Field visits are completed professionally and safely, and company standards for pet handling, visit notes, and reliability are consistently upheld.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who combines operational leadership with genuine enthusiasm for animal care and people development.

Strong candidates will likely bring:

  • 3+ years of leadership, supervisory, operations, hiring, training, or team development experience.
  • Prior hands-on experience in pet care, veterinary, shelter, daycare, grooming, or a related animal-focused environment.
  • The ability to oversee multiple people and priorities while staying calm, organized, and solutions-focused.
  • Strong communication skills and sound judgment with both staff and clients.
  • Confidence coaching others, reinforcing standards, and helping people grow.
  • Comfort using scheduling tools, mobile apps, Google Workspace, and documentation systems.
  • A valid driver's license, reliable transportation, current auto insurance, and the ability to travel locally.
  • Availability for weekends, some holidays, and occasional urgent coverage needs.
  • A genuine commitment to force-free, fear-free care and high professional standards.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation: $22-$26 per hour, depending on experience, plus cell phone stipend, mileage reimbursement and tips.

Benefits and perks may include:

  • Weekly direct deposit
  • Mileage reimbursement
  • Cell phone stipend
  • Tech stipend
  • Simple IRA with 2% non-elective employer contribution
  • Paid sick time
  • Paid time off
  • Holiday pay
  • Wellness stipend
  • Pet First Aid and CPR certification
  • Fear Free certification
  • Opportunity to pursue additional professional development and growth within the company

Employment type: Full-time.

Work Location / Schedule

This role is based in Waltham, MA, with local travel required to nearby service areas including Waltham, Belmont, Watertown, and surrounding communities. This is a hybrid field-based operations role that includes both administrative leadership work and in-the-field pet care visits.

  • Tuesday through Saturday between 9:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday through Sunday between 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
  • Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m., with one evening and one weekend per month

Flexibility is required based on business needs. Typical weekly hours are approximately 35-38, with occasional weeks up to 45 during high-volume periods or coverage needs.
