Job description

IT Assistant – Office Specialists

PEOPLE FIRST – Conduct fair, accurate, secure, and transparent elections to increase public participation and confidence.

The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division is seeking full-time, seasonal IT Assistants – Office Specialists to assist in the upcoming November 3, 2026 Statewide General Election. This is an excellent opportunity to be involved in the election process!

The Elections Division is an exciting, fast-paced environment, especially as elections approach. This is an excellent opportunity to work with a group of dynamic, well-organized, and highly efficient individuals committed to the democratic process.

IT Assistants will be responsible for a variety of tech projects and tasks throughout the election period. IT Assistants will work on-site at the Registration & Elections Division at 40 Tower Road in San Mateo, CA, and throughout the county at the various Vote Centers.

Examples Of Duties
  • Assist with office tech support
  • Perform basic PC/printer/monitor troubleshooting
  • Schedule site visits at fifty (50) Vote Center sites with County network engineers
  • Bring networking hardware to site
  • Test facility network connectivity at site
  • Record data into excel spreadsheets from tests conducted by the network engineers
  • Assist with Vote Center tech support
  • Functionally test equipment used at Vote Centers (iPads, wireless printers, WIFI printers, etc.)
  • Visit Vote Centers and report connection issues

The IT Assistant is classified as an Office Specialist. The starting hourly wage for this position is $31.61. Overtime is required.

This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Extra-help hours are dependent on the business needs of the department and work hours may vary from week to week. Extra-help employees shall not exceed 1,040 hours of work per fiscal year. Some extra-help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra-help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

Successful candidates for the IT Assistant positions will have previous experience providing basic PC/tech troubleshooting support.

Ideal candidates for the IT Assistant positions will have the following:

  • Knowledge and use of iPads and iPhones
  • Basic understanding of Wi-Fi networking
  • Basic understanding of hardware setup
  • Basic understanding of software installation
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues with system configurations
  • Well-organized/detail-oriented
  • Ability to explain issues clearly and follow instructions to meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills (written/verbal)
  • Customer service

Office hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. This position will require working overtime, including long hours, weekends, evenings, and holidays. Any authorized time worked more than 40 hours in the workweek shall be considered overtime and shall be compensable at the rate of one and one-half (1-1/2) times the overtime worked. The selected individuals must be available for the entire employment period until the completion of their assignment.
