What is an assistant network engineer?

Assistant Network Engineers are entry-level professionals who support the design, implementation, and maintenance of computer networks within an organization. They assist senior network engineers in tasks such as configuring network hardware, troubleshooting connectivity issues, and monitoring network performance. Their role is crucial in ensuring the reliability and security of an organization's IT infrastructure, and it often involves both technical hands-on work and documentation. Typically, Assistant Network Engineers possess foundational knowledge of networking concepts and may hold certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA.

What are some common challenges assistant network engineers face when troubleshooting network issues?

Assistant Network Engineers often encounter challenges such as isolating the root cause of connectivity problems, managing complex network topologies, and coordinating with multiple teams to resolve issues efficiently. They may also need to quickly learn new technologies or configurations specific to the organization. Developing strong analytical skills and effective communication is key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring network reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant network engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking fundamentals, troubleshooting, and basic knowledge of protocols like TCP/IP, often supported by a degree in IT or a related field. We are looking for a junior level network automation candidate.

In this role, you will:

  • Maintain documentation, including procedures and runbooks, and contribute to improving operational processes.
  • Utilize approved automation and AI-assisted tools to improve efficiency in troubleshooting, documentation, and routine operational activities.
  • Collaborate with peers, colleagues, and managers to resolve issues and achieve goals.

Required Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of Network Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, or education.
  • Basic knowledge of networking fundamentals including routing, switching, TCP/IP, and network security.
  • Exposure to scripting or programming (Python or similar) for task automation.
  • Understanding of REST APIs or system integration concepts.
  • Familiarity with network operating systems, tools, and troubleshooting methods.
  • Exposure to cloud networking concepts or environments.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with network automation or configuration tools (e.g., Ansible or similar).
  • Exposure to infrastructure-as-code concepts (e.g., Terraform or similar tools).
  • Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools.
  • Experience using AI-assisted or productivity tools to support operational workflows.
  • Foundational knowledge of Linux or system administration.
  • Relevant industry certifications (e.g., CCNA, cloud associate certifications).
