ELL Instructional Assistant Job Description


Position Summary

The ELL Instructional Assistant supports the ELL Teacher of Record in delivering language acquisition instruction and classroom support to English Language Learners, reinforcing instructional goals under the direction and supervision of certified staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Works under the direct supervision of the ELL Teacher of Record to reinforce English language development instruction with individual students or small groups.
  • Assists with preparation of instructional materials, language scaffolds, and visual supports for ELL students.
  • Supports administration of WIDA Screener and other ELL assessments under certified staff supervision, following all testing protocols.
  • Assists ELL students in general education classrooms with language accommodations, comprehension checks, and on-task support as directed by the ELL Teacher of Record.
  • Helps maintain accurate student records and instructional logs as directed.
  • Supports communication with ELL families, including basic interpretation support where qualified, and escalates complex communication needs to certified staff.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with FERPA.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the ELL Teacher of Record or building principal.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Paraprofessional qualification per Indiana and federal requirements (e.g., associate degree, 60 college credit hours, or passing score on a paraprofessional assessment).
  • Ability to work under the direction of certified instructional staff.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with students, families, and staff.

Preferred but not required:

  • Experience working with multilingual learners or in a classroom support role.
  • Bilingual or multilingual proficiency.


Compensation: Commensurate with experience.


Working Conditions:

This position may involve sitting and/or standing for extended periods.
