Job description

Summary

The Physics Laboratory Assistant will assist the Lab Manager by performing a limited number of routine non-technical and technical lab duties (applicant must have successfully passed CHE 095 or CHE 111L). Assist lab instructor in helping students acquire various technical skills through demonstration and supervision in the physical sciences labs: PHY 151L, PHY 201L, PHY 202L, PHY 211L, PHY 212L. Applicant must have successfully passed with a "B" or better in the course that he or she will be assisting.

Caring for the earth by having students dispose of hazardous chemicals in appropriate containers-not down the drain or trash can.


This is an In-Person Position

Essential Functions
  • Assist physics students in acquiring various technical skills through demonstration and supervision.

  • Help in the enforcement of safety rules as the students perform the experiments.

  • Assist students with basic computer programs such as those used for graphing (Excel, Graphical Analysis).

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the physics lab.

  • Perform clerical duties including photocopying.

  • Assist with the proctoring of exams and grading pre-labs.

  • Assist Lab Manager in preparing various solutions and reagents for instrumentation.

  • Assist Lab Manager in running samples, testing instrumentation.

  • This position regularly receives work assignments directly from others, in addition to the supervisor / manager, and list those position titles: Laboratory instructor.

  • Supervise lab students while they are conducting their experiment.

  • Assist with graphing using Excel or Graphical Analysis program.

  • Run instruments such as Spec 20, FT-IR under instructor supervision.

  • Enforce safety rules as the students perform the experiment.

Qualifications/Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED required

  • Enrolled in Bachelor's degree program, science major preferred.

  • Six to twelve months work related experience is required.

  • Basic working knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures and ability to apply in varied situations.
