Job description

HVAC Inspector / HVAC Technician (Industrial & Commercial)

Start: ASAP
Contract: 2-3mths, intention is to convert to full-time; long-term opportunity
Schedule: 50–60 hours per week (5x10s to 6x10s; overtime required; occasional after-hours testing)
Pay: $25-28/hr
Location: Wilson, NC 27893 (Future local project mobility to nearby site locations)

We are seeking a detail-oriented HVAC Inspector / HVAC Technician to oversee quality assurance, functional testing, and commissioning support on a large-scale industrial facility build in Wilson, NC.

This position focuses on heavy industrial and commercial mechanical systems, specifically verifying large-scale ductwork (such as 4' x 8' sheet metal lines) running from cleanroom environments outward. You will work alongside engineering and quality teams to ensure all mechanical installations meet strict engineering specifications, SMACNA standards, and quality compliance protocols.

Responsibilities:

Installation & Quality Surveillance

  • Perform visual, dimensional, and alignment inspections on industrial HVAC equipment, including Air Handling Units (AHUs), heavy ductwork, exhaust systems, dampers, insulation, brackets, and hangers.
  • Verify that mechanical installations strictly adhere to engineering drawings, project specifications, and SMACNA standards.
  • Conduct cleanroom-to-exterior ductwork inspections to ensure air tightness, proper assembly, and installation integrity.
  • Inspect the installation of HVAC automation controls, including sensors, thermostats, control panels, and associated wiring.

Functional Testing & Commissioning

  • Support pre-commissioning and functional testing activities, including airflow verification, pressure testing, leak testing, and vibration assessments.
  • Witness and assist with high-pressure/refrigeration piping tests (e.g., tests up to 600 PSI), which may occur after standard operating hours.
  • Attend and document Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).
  • Participate in system walkdowns and quality surveillance activities across active construction zones.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Identify, document, and report installation deficiencies, non-conformances, and quality issues.
  • Complete and maintain thorough QA/QC project records, including Inspection Test Plans (ITPs), punch lists, daily inspection logs, equipment tagging, and turnover packages.
  • Utilize MS Word and Excel to record, organize, and submit clear inspection reports.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience: 1 to 2+ years of hands-on experience in commercial or industrial HVAC installation, quality control (QA/QC), testing, or inspection. (Note: This is an industrial/commercial role; residential-only experience will not qualify).
  • Education: Diploma or Certificate in HVAC Technology, Mechanical Systems, or a related technical field (or equivalent trade experience).
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong familiarity with industrial HVAC systems, heavy ducting, AHUs, refrigeration/pressure testing, and SMACNA installation standards.
  • Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, mechanical schematics, and ductwork layout prints.
  • Computer Skills: Proficient in MS Office (Excel and Word) for logging QA forms, checklists, and tracking logs.
  • Site Readiness: Ability to work safely on active industrial construction sites and maintain flexible availability for peak testing windows.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working on high-tech, pharmaceutical, or advanced manufacturing construction projects.
  • Prior involvement with cleanroom mechanical installations, HVAC startup, or commissioning.
  • Familiarity with formal QA/QC turnover packages and punch-list management.
