Assistant Guide information

What is an assistant guide?

Assistant guides are individuals who support lead guides in organizing and conducting tours or outdoor activities. They help with group management, safety, logistics, and sharing information with participants. Assistant guides often assist in preparing equipment, ensuring safety protocols are followed, and providing customer service. Their role is vital in enhancing the overall experience for guests and supporting the main guide throughout the activity.

What are some typical challenges an assistant guide may face during group excursions, and how can they be managed?

Assistant Guides often encounter challenges such as managing diverse group dynamics, ensuring guest safety, and adapting to changing weather or unexpected situations on excursions. Effective communication, strong situational awareness, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential for managing these challenges. Building rapport with guests and maintaining close coordination with the lead guide help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Gaining experience and learning from seasoned guides also prepares Assistant Guides to handle these situations more confidently over time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant guide?

To thrive as an Assistant Guide, you generally need knowledge of the local environment, basic first aid certification, and experience in outdoor activities relevant to the tours offered. Familiarity with GPS devices, radio communication tools, and booking or scheduling software is often required. Strong interpersonal skills, clear communication, and problem-solving abilities help in managing groups and ensuring guest safety and satisfaction. These competencies are crucial for providing a safe, informative, and enjoyable experience for clients in diverse and sometimes unpredictable outdoor settings.

Job description

At St. Augustine Public Montessori School, we are dedicated to fostering a nurturing, peaceful, and vibrant learning environment where children are empowered to discover their unique potential. Following the authentic teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori, our beautiful prepared environments encourage independence, curiosity, and a deep respect for self, others, and the world around us. We are looking for a collaborative, mindful, and warm Assistant Guide to join our close-knit community.

ROLE OVERVIEW

As an Assistant Guide, you are the co-guardian of the classroom's peace and order. Working hand-in-hand with the Lead Guide, your primary goal is to support the children's independence and preserve the "prepared environment." Rather than directing the children, you will learn to observe mindfully, protect their concentration, and assist them in navigating their social and physical world with gentle guidance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Perserve the Prepared Environment: Maintain the beauty, cleanliness, and order of the classroom materials. Ensure that shelf items are complete, clean, and inviting daily.

Support Independence: Assist children with grace and courtesy in daily transitions, self-care and community tasks.

Protect Concentration: Observe the classroom dynamics and step in quietly to redirect behavior or resolve minor conflicts, allowing the Lead Guide to give uninterrupted individual lessons.

Model Grace and Courtesy: Consistently model respectful communication, gentle movements, and peaceful conflict resolution for the children.

Collaborate and Communicate: Meet regularly with the Lead Guide to share observations about individual children and align on classroom management strategies.

Supervision: Assist with recess, lunch, arrival/dismissal routines, ensuring physical safety and emotional security at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAITS WE VALUE

A deep, natural respect for young children and an understanding of (or a strong disire to learn) the Montessori philosophy. 1-3 years of experience working with children age 3-6 years. A calm, quiet and grounded presence. The ability to remain patient and gentle during moments of classroom chaos. Outstanding punctuality, dependability, and professional boundaries with families and staff.

Background check: Ability to pass all state-required background checks, fingerprinting, and CPR/First Aid certification.
