Job description

Job Summary:
The Assistant Grocery Store Manager is the strategic partner to the Store Manager and the primary leader of the shift management team. In this role, you bridge the gap between high-level operational goals and daily department execution. You are responsible for ensuring that every department -- from Produce to the Front End -- operates cohesively, safely, and profitably.
While the Store Manager focuses on long-term growth and external relations, the AGSM is the "Internal Operator," driving team productivity, maintaining total-score standards, and stepping into the Store Manager role in their absence. This is a high-energy, hands-on role where you maintain store standards by working directly in the aisles, at the registers, and in the stockroom alongside the team.
Essential Functions:
OPERATIONAL LEADERSHIP & OVERSIGHT
  • Total Store Management: Oversee the daily operations of all departments. Conduct "Store Walks" every two hours to ensure merchandising, cleanliness, and safety standards are met across the entire sales floor.
  • Scheduling & Labor: Assist in managing labor budgets by optimizing staff schedules and ensuring proper coverage during peak periods and deliveries.
  • Inventory Control: Monitor "shrink" across all departments (Fresh, Grocery, and Front End); work with Department Leads to refine ordering processes and reduce waste. Use inventory systems to ensure stock levels are lean but sufficient. Assist with the physical breakdown of key deliveries to ensure speed-to-shelf.
  • Operational Execution & Leadership: Direct the flow of the shift by actively participating in department tasks (Produce, Dairy, Pricing) to ensure store standards are met in real-time. Maintain a strong presence one the sales floor to monitor standards while carving out dedicated time for scheduling, vendor coordination, and performance tracking.

PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT
  • Team Coaching: Actively mentor Department Leads and associates, providing real-time feedback on performance and professional development. Actively work with Lead Associates (Dair, Produce, Pricing) to troubleshoot issues. You do not just assign the work; you verify the quality and jump in when the team needs an extra set of hands.
  • Onboarding & Training: Oversee the training programs for all new hires, ensuring they understand store culture, safety protocols, policies and procedures. Move beyond "paperwork reviews" by providing real-time coaching on the floor. Use formal check-ins to set goals, then use floor time to help associates reach them.
  • Conflict Resolution: Handle internal team disputes and personnel issues professionally, maintaining a positive and productive work environment.

COMPLIANCE & FINANCIAL INTEGRITY
  • Health & Safety: Ensure the store is always "inspection ready" for Maryland Health Department and other regulatory visits. Monitor all temperature logs and sanitation schedules.
  • Financial Reporting: Assist with daily bookkeeping, bank deposits, and invoice reconciliation. Ensure total accuracy in lottery and cash office operations.
  • Policy Enforcement: Consistently apply store policies regarding attendance, dress code, and safety protocols.

CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE EXCELLENCE
  • Service Standards: Set the tone for customer service by modeling proactive engagement and resolving high-level customer concerns that go beyond the Lead's scope.
  • Community Connection: Understand the Hagerstown market and ensure the product mix ad store environment reflect the needs of our local neighbors.

Experience
  • Three (3) + years' retail or grocery management, with a proven track record of leading teams and managing multiple departments.
  • Must be 18 years or older (required for tobacco/lottery sales in this jurisdiction).
  • Reliability: Punctuality is a must - our customers rely on us being open and ready.
  • Ability to stand for long periods, and lift to fifty (50) lbs. (crates of soda, milk, etc.).

Certifications
  • Must possess or being willing to obtain a Food Safety Manager certification.

Career Path
  • Store Manager
