Position AnnouncementUVU is seeking engaged and organized student leaders to serve as Peer Mentors for two of the university's project-based learning summer learning experiences: UVU Excelerate and Empowered Professionals of Tomorrow.
UVU Excelerate is an immersive summer experience where incoming freshmen jump-start college by tackling real projects embedded into general ed classes, earning credit, and building confidence on day one at UVU.
Empowered Professionals of Tomorrow is a highly competitive early college access program where high school students take real UVU classes, explore career paths, and get hands-on support to launch their future now.
As a Peer Mentor, you will be the key for student support! You will mentor program participant students, guide project teams, model leadership and professionalism, and help participants access the resources they need to succeed! This role is perfect for UVU students who enjoy helping others, sharing their experiences, and want to build strong leadership and program management experience.
Summary of ResponsibilitiesPosition Overview Peer Mentors support students and faculty across two phases of the program cycle:
Pre-Program Phase (January - May) All Peer Mentors participate in program planning and operational support before summer begins. These hours are scheduled throughout Spring in a flexible schedule across, mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends. Responsibilities include:
- Assisting with recruitment outreach to prospective students, schools, counselors, and community partners
- Supporting enrollment processes including student communication, reminders, roster updates, and data tracking
- Helping with pre-program operations and events
- Attending trainings, planning meetings, and onboarding sessions
This phase ensures program participants are informed, welcomed, connected with mentors, and ready to begin the program in Summer!
Summer Program Phase (May - August) Peer Mentors transition to active mentorship and student support roles during summer programming. This part of the role requires mentors to be available for specific shifts and hours during the summer program running times. Responsibilities include:
Mentorship and Student Support - Build supportive, professional relationships with participants.
- Mentor students in teamwork, study habits, time management, and confidence-building.
- Provide in-class support, lead study sessions, and help students stay organized with assignments and deadlines.
- Guide both high school and college students as they navigate college expectations. Classroom Support
- Support PBL classes by helping facilitate classroom team tasks, collaborate, and apply concepts to real partner projects.
- Assist faculty with classroom setup, activities, workshops, and guest speakers.
- Serve as a communication bridge between students and faculty.
Program Operations and Resource Connection - Maintain attendance, records, and program documentation.
- Help coordinate events and support logistical needs.
- Connect students to UVU resources such as tutoring, advising, or student services.
- Provide supervision and follow safety protocols when working with minors in Empowered.
- Address concerns early and communicate professionally and respectfully in all interactions.
Peer Mentors may work within our Excelerate, Empowered, or both teams, depending on program fit and availability.
- Typical weekly hours 8-17 hours per week (depending on assignment)
- Work occurs in pre-program on a flexible schedule between 9:00 am and 9:00 pm, based on program schedules, work during program operations runs between 8:00 am and 4:00pm based on program schedules
- Mandatory pre-summer training sessions are required
- UVU student employees may not exceed 28 hours per week
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications- Current UVU student in good academic standing
- Strong understanding of UVU resources, supports, and opportunities
- Strong communication skills and comfort assisting or speaking with groups
- Reliable, organized, professional, and able to work both independently and collaboratively
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to UVU safety and conduct policies
Preferred Skills and Attributes - Leadership experience or a strong interest in mentoring
- Ability to guide groups and facilitate structured sessions
- Confidence in problem-solving and offering student support
- Strong time-management and organizational abilities
- Responsive and able to support learners with various needs
- Fluency in another language is helpful but optional
