Job description

Burns & McDonnell's South Central Region is seeking an Assistant Environmental Scientist to join our Environmental & Regulatory Compliance (ERC) Department in Texas.

The Assistant Environmental Scientist will support delivery of environmental assessments, compliance management plans, and permitting tasks for various industries including transmission and distribution, power generation, chemical manufacturing, aerospace manufacturing, utilities, and technology. This position supports the growth of the Environmental Services Global Practice based upon Burns & McDonnell's core values of safety, client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, and overall outstanding service.

Assigned tasks may include the following:

  • Assist in conducting environmental site inspections and preparation of site inspection reports.
  • Assist in proper collection of soil and water samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Assist in conducting Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) and preparation of Phase I ESA reports.
  • Assist in conducting Hazardous and Regulated Material Surveys and preparation of the associated reports.
  • Assist in preparation of compliance plans such as Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs), Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans, and Waste Management Plans.  
  • Assist in reviewing regulations and identifying permits applicable to design, construction, and operation of various projects and facilities.
  • Assist in preparing permit applications.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports.
  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or a related natural science degree from an accredited program required.

  • Prior internship or natural science field experience preferred.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong technical writing skills preferred.

  • Ability to clearly communicate both verbal and written technical information.

  • Basic knowledge of environmental site assessment methods.

  • Basic knowledge of federal environmental regulations.

  • Basic knowledge of environmental compliance requirements and best practices.

  • Basic knowledge of GPS and working in the ArcGIS desktop environment.

  • Must be proficient in the use of computer software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER Certification preferred.

  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

  • Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.

  • Valid driver's license required. In addition, must meet standards to qualify for and maintain the Company's vehicle driving privileges as outlined in the Company's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.
