Job description

Description Burns & McDonnell is seeking an Assistant Civil Engineer with water or wastewater engineering experience to add to our Water Global Practice's team in Kansas City (MO).
We are looking for a self-motivated engineer and civil designer to lead or support a wide variety of civil and environmental engineering designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments on a variety of projects in engineering markets and contribute to implementing department strategy, vision, and culture.
The position offers the opportunity to practice in a variety of technical areas, including but not limited to:
  • Collection Systems - Planning, design, construction, and analysis of sanitary or combined sewer systems including condition assessment, hydrology, flow and rainfall analysis, and pipe hydraulics. Developing and evaluating alternatives for the rehabilitation of aging water, sewer, and drainage systems, including the use of trenchless technologies (e.g., CIPP, pipe bursting, slip-lining) and traditional replacement methods.
  • Water Distribution - Planning, design, construction, and analysis of water distribution systems, including storage and pump stations.
  • Site/Civil - Site grading and design, site stormwater modeling and design, design of other site utilities (water and wastewater), etc. Coordinate field investigations and development of surveys.

The Assistant Civil Engineer will work within our region's team to provide technical leadership and mentorship of early career team members, collaborate broadly to support our Water global practice, and will generally be responsible for the following:
  • Assist in supporting engineering teams to deliver well-coordinated, high-quality designs for civil or environmental engineering projects.
  • Assist in supporting multidisciplinary projects with varying degrees of technical complexity.
  • Assist in preparing documentation for design projects, including design criteria, technical letters, memorandums, reports, drawings, detailed design packages, and cost estimates.
  • Assist in providing technical leadership and quality reviews aligned with experience.
  • Assist in the execution of projects within scope, budget, schedule, quality, safety, risk, and client expectations.
  • Assist in establishing client relations and involvement with marketing, contractual, management, and design meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor Degree in Civil, Environmental or related Engineering degree from an ABET accredited program required or;
  • Bachelor Degree in Civil, Environmental, or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam required.
  • Professional civil or environmental engineering experience in consulting is strongly preferred.
  • Experience and knowledge of water and sewer asset management principles preferred.
  • Experience with inflow and infiltration (I&I) studies and sanitary sewer evaluation surveys (SSES) preferred.
  • Experience overseeing construction and an understanding of construction methods and procedures preferred.
  • Basic knowledge in standard civil/environmental engineering techniques, principles and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Basic computer skills (e.g. AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS, and civil analysis programs).
  • Proficiency in technical area specific programs such as hydraulic modeling software preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Engineers in Training-EIT Certification strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
  • Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.
