Remote Environmental Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Environmental Engineer, and why are they important?

Remote Environmental Engineers need a solid background in environmental science or engineering, with a relevant degree and often professional certification such as a PE (Professional Engineer) license. Familiarity with GIS software, environmental modeling tools, and remote collaboration platforms is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective written communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for working independently and with distributed teams. These competencies ensure accurate assessments, regulatory compliance, and successful project delivery in a remote work environment.

What is a Remote Environmental Engineer?

A Remote Environmental Engineer is a professional who works primarily from a location outside of a traditional office, using digital tools to design, implement, and manage projects that protect the environment. They may conduct environmental assessments, develop sustainability plans, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations, all while collaborating with teams and clients online. This role often involves data analysis, report writing, and virtual meetings to support environmental initiatives from a distance.

How do Remote Environmental Engineers typically collaborate with on-site teams and stakeholders?

Remote Environmental Engineers often work closely with on-site teams, project managers, and regulatory agencies through virtual meetings, cloud-based project management tools, and frequent email or phone communication. They may review site data, analyze reports, and provide technical guidance from a distance, while relying on local staff for fieldwork and sample collection. Clear communication and strong organizational skills are essential to ensure projects remain on track and regulatory requirements are met. Building strong relationships remotely can be a challenge, but regular check-ins and proactive updates help foster effective teamwork.

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Lead Backend Engineer based in the Netherlands.

As a Lead Backend Engineer, you will join a high-performing engineering team delivering advanced software solutions for global enterprise clients.
You will take ownership of designing, building, and scaling modern backend systems that support mission-critical applications.
This role combines deep technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, allowing you to guide engineering practices and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
You will work on challenging projects involving cloud platforms, distributed architectures, APIs, and AI-enabled products.
The position is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems while mentoring others and driving innovation.
You will be part of a remote-first environment that values autonomy, continuous learning, and engineering excellence.

Accountabilities:

As a Lead Backend Engineer, you will be responsible for architecting and delivering scalable backend solutions while providing technical leadership across complex software projects. You will collaborate with engineering teams, clients, and technical specialists to build reliable systems using modern technologies and development practices.

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend architectures, including microservices, APIs, containers, and cloud-based solutions.
  • Lead technical delivery for complex software engineering projects, ensuring high-quality implementation and effective engineering practices.
  • Build and deploy backend solutions using modern frameworks, with a strong focus on C# and .NET technologies.
  • Architect and optimize distributed applications hosted on cloud platforms, particularly Azure environments.
  • Develop and integrate AI/ML-enabled capabilities into production backend systems, including APIs, pipelines, and inference services.
  • Collaborate with AI and machine learning specialists to transform models into reliable, scalable production solutions.
  • Establish and improve engineering standards around architecture, deployment, monitoring, and performance.
  • Mentor engineers, provide technical guidance, and contribute to team development and knowledge sharing.
  • Support client-facing engagements by translating business requirements into effective technical solutions.
  • Promote best practices in DevOps, CI/CD, automation, and software quality.
Requirements:

You are an experienced backend engineering professional with strong architectural skills, a passion for technology, and the ability to lead complex technical initiatives. You are comfortable working independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively with global teams.

  • 10+ years of professional software development experience focused on backend technologies and modern application architectures.
  • Strong hands-on experience with C# and .NET development.
  • Proven experience designing, building, and deploying scalable distributed systems using APIs, containers, cloud platforms, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience developing solutions on cloud infrastructure, preferably Azure.
  • Practical experience contributing to AI/ML-enabled products, including integrating AI services or machine learning models into backend systems.
  • Experience working with ML/AI specialists to support model deployment, monitoring, data flows, and production performance.
  • Previous experience leading engineering teams and mentoring developers.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive, adaptable, and solution-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fully remote environment with strong self-management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Degree in Computer Science or equivalent technical experience.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience in client-facing software engineering roles and managing technical delivery.
  • Strong background in backend architecture and modern software design patterns.
  • Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or MySQL.
  • Understanding of DevOps practices, CI/CD tooling, and cloud deployment processes.
  • Familiarity with React.js and modern frontend development principles.
Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation package with benefits, paid vacation, and sick leave.
  • Fully remote working environment with flexible hours and no required business travel.
  • Generous home office equipment allowance to support effective remote work.
  • Option to work from home, a local coworking space, or a combination of both.
  • Opportunity to collaborate with a globally distributed team of highly skilled engineers.
  • Exposure to challenging, high-impact software projects for leading organizations.
  • Startup-style environment with strong opportunities for professional growth and career development.
  • Flexible work culture focused on outcomes, autonomy, and engineering excellence.
