DISPATCHER

REPORTS TO: General Manager

Note: This position works closely with plant and delivery personnel to coordinate scheduling. This coordination is functional, not supervisory — hiring, discipline, and termination authority rests solely with the General Manager and Human Resources. This position does not have supervisory authority over other employees.

JOB SUMMARY — THIS IS A NON-EXEMPT POSITION

Dispatch ready mix concrete in a timely manner. This includes working with customers to provide efficient service and customer satisfaction, and establishing good working relationships with employees involved in delivery. This position also performs proper batching of concrete in accordance with all job specifications and mix designs. Quality, consistency, and efficiency must be a priority.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Communicate efficiently with customers and company personnel. (Familiarity with terminology and materials is helpful.)
  • Extensive knowledge of the surrounding area.
  • Problem solver.
  • Ability to take initiative to increase the quality of one's skills to become more efficient.
  • Make good judgment calls when under pressure.
  • Read and understand maps.
  • Perform mathematical functions pertaining to billing, volumes, and quantities.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute ratio and percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but involved written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to apply basic computer skills for entering orders.
  • Training or equivalent combination of education and experience that will provide the knowledge needed to perform the duties assigned with this position. (Training will be provided.)
  • Read, write, and speak English. (Spanish not necessary, but a bonus.)
  • Ability to interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.
  • Write routine reports and correspondence.
  • A CDL is not a condition of hire for this position. Employees who separately hold a valid CDL and are asked to drive as part of this role must maintain DOT medical certification and comply with applicable FMCSA/DOT requirements.
  • Must be open to working weekends or after-hours duty if necessary to carry out the delivery of services to our customers.
  • Duties may change at any time with or without notice.
  • Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Dispatch orders in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Communicate with drivers and direct them to delivery locations.
  • Perform opening and closing procedures, answer phones, take orders, and schedule trucks and drivers.
  • Work with customers in a positive, professional manner when there are technical problems or conflicting delivery times; establish satisfactory rescheduled times, and contact contractors who have future ready-mix pour schedules and have failed to call in.
  • Ship orders in a timely and efficient manner; work with customers to adjust truck demand to meet proper delivery rate.
  • Coordinate with drivers on all aspects of delivery and product to provide better quality and service, including scheduling of independent truck owners.
  • Perform batching of ready-mix, ensuring that proper design and job specifications are followed.
  • Inspect plant equipment and facilities for mechanical problems and other equipment malfunctions; relay these problems to the Plant Operations Manager.
  • Perform and record product testing on a scheduled basis.
  • Occasionally drive a Ready-Mix or dump truck as an incidental, non-essential duty.
  • Assist others with facility maintenance and safety tasks during slow or idle periods.
  • This position does not have authority to hire, discipline, or terminate other employees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical demand requires MEDIUM level work: exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Continuously work in various weather conditions — hot, cold, wet, dry, humid, wind, etc.
  • Occasionally walk / carry objects on varying terrain — paved, unpaved, dirt, rough terrain, etc.
  • Must be able to function in both an office environment and the company's industrial environment, including standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, climbing, crouching, or crawling as needed at the plant level.
  • Required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
  • Occasional use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), including respirator.
  • Vision requirements: close (20 inches or less), distance (20 feet or more), color, and peripheral vision.
  • Industrial risks including noise, dust, electrical and machine risks, large equipment and vehicles, and occasional work in enclosed spaces.
  • Required to push, lift, pull, or carry objects, and use abdominal/lower back muscles to provide physical support to operations as needed. (Refer to physical assessment for this position.)
  • Good manual dexterity (hand-arm, two-hand, and multi-limb coordination) and good stamina.
