Job description

SUMMARY:

Our client, The Leatherstocking Council - Boy Scouts of America, is hiring for a Director of Development. The Leatherstocking region covers Oneida, Madison, Herkimer, Otsego, Delaware, and Schoharie Counties. The Council serves more than 2,400 Scouts and volunteer leaders in its service territory. For more than 110 years the Scouting program has helped young people develop into mature young adults by providing first-hand, real-world experiences preparing them for success in life. The Director of Development will oversee donor solicitation, major gifts, grant writing, and event planning while fostering corporate partnerships and donor relationships.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

80% of Activity

Corporate Partnerships and Donor Relations:

  • Works closely with the CEO/Scout Executive to pursue a coordinated and strategic program of cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of annual and major gift prospects and donors.
  • Implement a comprehensive annual giving strategy that includes personal solicitation, direct mail and fundraising events management. This will include individuals in early-stage cultivation and/or with whom the council has little to no relationship.
  • Executes approximately 100 donor meetings per year. Ability to travel to donor meetings.
  • Documents contacts and strategies through the prospect tracking module of the Blackbaud CRM, the in-house database for gift recording/reporting and all donor/prospect information. Adheres to the policies and procedures for accepting, recording and acknowledging gifts.

Event Planning:

  • Plan and execute fundraising events, including golf tournaments, auctions, and community outreach activities. Ensure events meet fundraising goals and enhance the organization’s visibility.
  • Recruit, train, inspire and staff volunteer committees of the fundraising events.

20% of Activity

Additional Administrative Duties:

  • Participates as a full member of the council team, attending full staff meetings, professional development activities, and other staff meetings as appropriate.
  • Supports strategic operating plans for the council as directed by the CEO/Scout Executive; establishes coordinated goals and implements programs to meet goals, and development policies and priorities.
  • Provides staff support to the Executive Board for all development-related issues.
  • Participates in council events to cultivate relationships with donors, prospects, key volunteers, and all internal partners. Pursues professional growth activities with the approval and support of the CEO/Scout Executive.
  • Grant writing, including researching funding opportunities, drafting compelling proposals, and managing submission processes to secure funding from foundations, corporations, and government sources.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • A minimum of 5 years of proven success in fundraising, including direct donor solicitation and cultivating new donor relationships, or extensive experience in sales, marketing, and communications.
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License with ability to travel, including local and regional visits, and work evenings and occasional weekends.

Compensation:

The Leatherstocking Council is an equal opportunity employer. Offering a competitive salary between $65,000 and $85,000, plus a competitive bonus structure. The position also offers benefits to include major medical, prescription coverage, dental, vision, life-insurance, long-term disability, accidental death, a defined benefit retirement plan, plus compensation for authorized and approved business-related expenses including mileage reimbursement.
