Assistant Cryogenics information

What are some common challenges faced by an Assistant Cryogenics technician, and how can they be addressed?

Assistant Cryogenics technicians often work with extremely low temperatures and specialized equipment, which can present challenges such as maintaining safety protocols and handling delicate materials. Staying vigilant about safety procedures is crucial, as even minor errors can lead to equipment damage or personal risk. Additionally, troubleshooting system malfunctions and ensuring the reliability of cryogenic storage require strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills. Collaborating closely with senior technicians and engineers can help address these challenges and provide opportunities for learning and growth within the team.

What is the difference between Assistant Cryogenics vs Laboratory Technician?

AspectAssistant CryogenicsLaboratory Technician
Required CredentialsRelevant certifications or training in cryogenics or related fieldsAssociate degree or certification in laboratory sciences
Work EnvironmentIndustrial facilities, cryogenic storage and processing areasResearch labs, medical labs, or industrial testing environments
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in industries like aerospace, energy, and medical storageCommon in healthcare, research institutions, and manufacturing

Assistant Cryogenics and Laboratory Technicians share some technical skills and work in scientific environments, but Assistant Cryogenics focuses on handling cryogenic materials and equipment in industrial settings, while Laboratory Technicians typically work in research or medical labs performing tests and analyses. The roles differ mainly in specialization and work environment, though both require technical training and safety knowledge.

What are Assistant Cryogenics?

Assistant Cryogenics, also known as Cryogenics Assistants or Cryogenics Technicians, are professionals who support the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of cryogenic systems and equipment. They work with materials and machinery that operate at extremely low temperatures, often assisting in scientific research, industrial processes, or medical applications. Their responsibilities can include preparing cryogenic fluids, maintaining safety protocols, troubleshooting equipment, and ensuring the proper storage and handling of cryogenic substances. This role requires attention to detail, technical skills, and adherence to strict safety standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Assistant Cryogenics Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Cryogenics Technician, you need a solid understanding of physics, chemistry, and laboratory safety procedures, often supported by a relevant technical degree or certification. Familiarity with cryogenic equipment, vacuum systems, and data logging software is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure safe, efficient operation and maintenance of sensitive cryogenic systems, which are critical for research and industrial applications.

Job Title
Field Service Engineer, Cryogenic Solutions / East Coast
Job Description
Join Azenta Life Sciences as a Field Service Engineer - supporting advanced Cryogenic solutions in the field
Join Azenta Life Sciences and step directly into a hands-on Field Service Engineering role where you'll install, maintain, and troubleshoot cryogenic storage, transport, and thawing systems at customer sites. You'll work on the front lines of our Cryo technology, ensuring system uptime, resolving technical issues, and supporting customers who rely on precise temperature control to protect valuable biological samples.
How you'll add value in the role of Field Service Engineer
As a Field Service Engineer at Azenta, you will be on the front lines of our Cryo solutions, working directly with customers to keep cryogenic freezers, automated storage systems, carriers, and thawing devices operating reliably and efficiently. You will play a hands-on role in installing, maintaining, and improving LNโ‚‚-based and cryo-temperature systems, while building trusted relationships with customers and internal teams.
You will develop your technical expertise, sharpen your troubleshooting skills in cold-chain and cryogenic environments, and contribute directly to customer satisfaction and business success; all while working in a collaborative, safety-focused environment with opportunities to grow.
What you'll do...
  • Install, modify, repair, diagnose, and perform preventive maintenance on cryogenic storage, transport, and thawing equipment, including associated software and hardware, in accordance with Azenta policies and procedures.
  • Support customers using automated cryo storage systems, LNโ‚‚ vapor freezers, cryogenic carriers, and dry-bath thawing solutions, ensuring optimal system performance.
  • Interface directly with customers to meet contract SLAs and maintain high levels of customer satisfaction in regulated laboratory and clinical environments.
  • Maintain a safe and compliant working environment, particularly when working with cryogenic temperatures, liquid nitrogen systems, and safety protocols.
  • Obtain and maintain required Equipment Service and Operation Certifications, including Cryo-specific systems.
  • Accurately document service activities through Service Reports, Status Reports, and performance summaries.
  • Respond productively to changing priorities, including system alerts, escalations, and tool-down events.
  • Act as a point of contact (PoC) for customers and internal Azenta management.
  • Provide weekly system performance summaries, including system events, Pareto analysis, and root cause / corrective action reporting.
  • Support additional KPI measurement requests throughout the contract period.
  • Assist with sample migration activities, including the transition of samples into new Cryo storage formats and systems.

What you'll bring...
We are looking for a technically skilled, customer-focused Field Service Engineer who enjoys solving problems in real-world environments and takes pride in delivering reliable service.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate of Science (AS) degree, technical certificate, or equivalent hands-on technical training
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant technical experience, or equivalent military technical training
  • Strong electrical and mechanical fundamentals
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in English (reading, writing, and speaking), including effective interaction with customers and internal teams
  • Valid driver's license, good driving record, reliable transportation, and ability to obtain a valid passport during employment
  • Ability to successfully pass background screening requirements
  • Must be located on the US East Coast with convenient access to a major airport for frequent travel.

Technical & Professional Skills You'll Use
  • Proven troubleshooting skills, using a structured and methodical approach to diagnose system issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Ability to work independently in the field while prioritizing issues based on urgency, customer impact, and business needs.
  • Strong sense of ownership and commitment to resolving problems through to completion.
  • Comfort working with computers and standard business software, including Windows-based operating systems.
  • Experience documenting work through service reports, system updates, and performance summaries.
  • Familiarity with Oracle or similar systems is a plus, but not required.

Working conditions
  • Domestic (and occasional international) travel will be required
  • On rare occasions, availability for on-call coverage, holiday, or weekend work may be needed
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders or scaffolding, and safely use required personal protective equipment (PPE)
