Assistant Cryo Electron Microscopy information

What is an assistant cryo electron microscopy?

An Assistant Cryo Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM) professional is responsible for supporting the operation and maintenance of cryo-electron microscopes in scientific research facilities. They assist senior scientists with sample preparation, microscope calibration, data collection, and basic troubleshooting. Their role is crucial in ensuring that high-quality images of biological or material samples are obtained at extremely low temperatures, which is essential for understanding structures at the molecular level. Assistant Cryo-EM staff may also help with training users and maintaining lab protocols.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an assistant cryo electron microscopy?

As an Assistant Cryo-EM specialist, your daily tasks typically include preparing biological or material samples for imaging, operating the cryo-electron microscope under supervision, and performing routine maintenance and calibration of equipment. You may also assist with data collection, image processing, and documentation to support research projects. Collaboration with principal investigators, lab technicians, and data analysts is common, ensuring accurate results and maintaining laboratory standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant cryo electron microscopy?

To thrive as an Assistant Cryo Electron Microscopy Technician, you need a strong background in biology, chemistry, or physics, often with a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with cryo-EM instrumentation, sample preparation techniques, and image processing software such as RELION or CryoSPARC is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure accurate data collection and collaboration with research teams. These skills are vital for producing high-quality results and supporting advanced structural biology research.

What is the difference between Assistant Cryo Electron Microscopy vs Assistant Electron Microscopy?

AspectAssistant Cryo Electron MicroscopyAssistant Electron Microscopy
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's or master's in biology, biochemistry, or related fieldsSimilar educational background, often with additional microscopy certifications
Work EnvironmentSpecialized cryo-EM labs with cryogens and advanced imaging equipmentGeneral microscopy labs, including SEM and TEM facilities
Industry UsagePrimarily in structural biology, biochemistry, and pharmaceutical researchBroader applications across materials science, biology, and nanotechnology

Assistant Cryo Electron Microscopy focuses on preparing and imaging biological samples at cryogenic temperatures using cryo-EM technology, while Assistant Electron Microscopy covers a wider range of microscopy techniques, including SEM and TEM, often in more general lab settings. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but differ in specialized equipment and research focus.

About the Role

We are looking for a skilled Cryo-electron microscopist to join the Research Technologies Branch (RTB), Electron Microscopy Unit (EMU). This position is based at Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) in Hamilton, Montana. In this role, you'll work closely with scientists in a collaborative, fast-paced environment, helping generate high-quality data that supports infectious disease research.

This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys both the technical side of electron microscopy and the collaborative nature of working with different research groups. If you have strong cryo-EM experience and are excited about learning and applying newer approaches like room-temperature EM, FIB-SEM, and cryo-EM, this could be a great fit.

What You'll Do

  • Perform negative staining on purified proteins to evaluate sample quality.

  • Prepare biological samples for cryo-EM (plunge freezing) and perform imaging and analysis.

  • Operate and help maintain TEM and other ancillary instruments, including troubleshooting when needed.

  • Work closely with NIAID investigators to plan experiments, interpret results, and solve technical challenges.

  • Help bring new capabilities online, including techniques like CLEM, FIB-SEM, and cryo-EM.

  • Keep clear, well-organized records in line with NIH standards for rigor and reproducibility.

  • Train and support other lab members or facility users in EM techniques and image processing.

  • Contribute to the overall operation of the lab, including equipment upkeep and safety compliance.

What We're Looking For

  • Master's degree or higher in a relevant field (Cell Biology, Structural Biology, Biophysics, or similar).

  • Solid understanding of EM sample preparation and imaging workflows.

  • Experience operating and troubleshooting EM instruments.

  • Someone who communicates well, works collaboratively, and is comfortable supporting multiple projects.

Nice to Have
