Job Description:
CASBR is a medium throughput collaborative center that facilitates a variety of research projects by preparing samples for MALDI-MSI analysis. Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) is a novel technique that combines spatial information with mass spectra, generating powerful insights into cancer biology, neurodegenerative disease, and developmental biology among other key research questions. Join a dynamic, social, and hard-working team on the cutting edge of MALDI research with opportunities for professional development, authorship on scientific manuscripts, and- on occasion- even fun.
This position will play a key role in facilitating sample preparation, instrumental analysis, and data processing. The successful candidate will contribute to high quality, reproducible research through rigorous scientific practices and persistent, creative problem-solving while working cooperatively with CASBR's technicians and collaborators.
  • Support CASBR Center research functions, including sample preparation, instrumental analysis, data analysis, and presentation of results
  • Section tissues using a cryostat
  • Prepare samples via enzyme digestion and/or matrix application using HTX sprayer systems
  • operate Bruker TimsTOFflex instruments by loading samples and monitoring runs
  • Perform basic data analysis using Bruker software SciLS and prepare clear, easy-to-understand data packets for collaborators using Metaboscape
  • Assist with method optimization, troubleshooting, and problem solving
  • Participate in quality control procedures and reagent preparation to ensure accurate and reproducible results
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safety compliant laboratory environment

Expected Salary:
$15/hr to $16/hr, commensurate with experience
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a biological, chemical, or related scientific discipline (or equivalent laboratory experience)
  • Prior hands-on laboratory experience, including basic laboratory techniques
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow protocols accurately
  • Critical thinking and situational awareness
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a research environment
  • Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills
  • Interest in learning advanced analytical methods and contributing to collaborative research projects

Preferred:
  • Excellent fine motor control or previous experience with cryostat operation
  • Previous experience with mass spectrometry methods or analysis
  • Familiarity with data analysis and scientific data presentation
  • Experience working in a shared-resource or core laboratory environment
  • Skills in basic mechanical or computer repair
