Job description

Summary

The Staff Accountant II is an experienced accounting professional responsible for performing a wide range of general accounting functions, including general ledger maintenance, bank reconciliations, tax accounting, and financial statement preparation. The role supports financial operations by maintaining and reconciling financial records, processing invoices and payments, preparing reports, and assisting with audits and tax filings. This role will ensure that the department is informed and up to date with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, and be an expert with and ensure compliance with all Collective Bargaining Units and other Government Contract pay requirements. Reporting to the Assistant Controller, this employee must be detail-oriented, accurate, and reliable with strong communication skills.

Essential Tasks (minimum requirements) to be performed with or without reasonable accommodation

General Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Perform general ledger accounting, including journal entries, account analysis, and month-end and year-end close activities.
  • Prepare and post journal entries, ensuring accurate financial reporting.
  • Prepare and review bank and balance sheet reconciliations; investigate and resolve discrepancies.
  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly and annual income statements and supporting schedules.
  • Assist with financial reporting and internal management reports.

Tax Accounting

  • Support tax-related activities, including accruals, filing and compliance.
  • Assist with preparation of information for external tax advisors and audits.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable tax regulations and reporting requirements.

Government Contract Accounting

  • Assist in maintaining accounting records in compliance with government contract requirements.
  • Assist with cost tracking, reporting, and audits related to government contracts.
  • Ensure adherence to application regulations and internal controls.
  • Timely preparation and submission of all invoices per contract/proposal.
  • Compile data, analyze financial billing information for an organization.
  • Develop integrated revenue/expense analysis reports.
  • Review time sheets, direct labor and expense, overhead and general and administrative charges to be applied to a project.
  • Set-up and maintain contracts in accounting system according to contract type.
  • Timely preparation and delivery of accurate invoices to customers.
  • Respond to requests for more detail from customers and management.
  • Create and submit government reports related to projects.
  • Compile information for internal and external auditors, customer, etc. as required.
  • Participate in a wide variety of special projects and compile a variety of special reports.

Additional Duties

  • Serve as a subject matter resource for accounting and payroll procedures.
  • Assist with internal and external audits.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and internal controls.
  • Perform ad hoc reports and analysis.
  • Perform other accounting-related duties as assigned.

Education, Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business Administration; or equivalent of 4 years of education and/or experience required.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in A/P, A/R, general ledger, and payroll.
  • Detailed knowledge of government contracting.
  • Experience with Deltek, and Dayforce.
  • Adherence with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel and Word; specifically, advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office Excel.
  • A thorough knowledge of standard contract terms, including hourly, lumps sum, not-to-exceed and how they are applied in the billing process.
  • Extensive knowledge of the payroll function including preparation, balancing, internal control, and payroll taxes.
  • Experience with Union Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well with others under deadline situations and respond to changes in priorities.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Strong work ethic and a team player.
  • Experience training or mentoring accounting or payroll staff.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, strong analytical skills and effective problem solving.
  • Reliable, accurate, and an expert with data entry.
  • Strong project management skills.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not carry any supervisory responsibilities.

 

Work Authorization/Security Clearance

Employment is contingent upon the successful results of a background check and drug screen. In addition to the completion of a federal background investigation and while in the process of obtaining a Top Secret Clearance, must be able to obtain an interim clearance and/or appropriate agency approvals. Upon receipt of Top Secret clearance, must be able to maintain active Top Secret clearance and all agency approvals required of their position.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days of work are Monday through Friday, schedule to be determined between the core hours of 6:00 a.m. MST and 6:00 p.m. MST. Evening and weekend shifts may be required.

 

Work Environment & Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment. The employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee will frequently be required to have prolonged periods sitting at a desk, working on a computer and using the phone.

Six-month probation at start of initial employment and/or when position is new for the employee.
