Job description

We are assisting one of our clients with their search for an Assistant Controller. The Assistant Controller will play a key role in supporting the accounting and financial reporting function of a growing organization. This individual will oversee core accounting activities, support financial reporting, maintain a strong internal control environment, and help build scalable processes to support continued growth. The Assistant Controller will partner closely with finance leadership while directly managing and developing two Staff Accountants.
  • Location: Arlington Heights, IL - hybrid
  • Compensation: $120,000-$165,000 plus bonus
Responsibilities
  • Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring timely and accurate recording of financial activity
  • Review general ledger activity, journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial schedules to maintain the integrity of financial reporting
  • Assist in the preparation of GAAP and statutory financial reports, including regulatory filings, supporting schedules, and audit-related documentation
  • Manage accounting activities related to premiums, claims, commissions, and reinsurance transactions while partnering with operational and actuarial teams
  • Monitor and enhance internal controls, accounting procedures, and reporting practices to support compliance and operational effectiveness
  • Serve as a key point of contact for external auditors and regulatory examinations, coordinating requests and supporting required deliverables
  • Partner with finance leadership to streamline workflows, improve reporting capabilities, and support system enhancements and automation initiatives
  • Review intercompany transactions, accruals, prepaid balances, fixed assets, and other critical accounting areas to ensure accurate financial results
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to assess the accounting impact of business initiatives, transactions, and new programs
  • Lead, coach, and develop accounting team members while helping to establish a high-performing and accountable finance organization
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting, financial reporting, or audit experience, preferably within the insurance or financial services sector
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and statutory accounting concepts, including financial statement preparation and regulatory reporting requirements
  • Experience supporting accounting close cycles, internal controls, audit processes, and day-to-day accounting functions in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven ability to supervise and develop accounting staff, including reviewing work product, managing priorities, and supporting professional growth
  • Advanced Excel proficiency and experience with ERP systems and financial reporting tools; exposure to system implementations or process improvement initiatives is a plus
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities with exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships across teams and functions
