Assistant Controller

Napa Valley, CA  |  Wine Industry  |  Department: Finance & Accounting

About Us

Our client is a respected name in the wine industry, valued for its quality products and strong reputation with customers. As the organization continues to expand, they are adding an Assistant Controller to their finance team to help support that growth.

Position Summary

The Assistant Controller plays a central role in the organization's day-to-day financial management. This position is accountable for accurate financial reporting and dependable internal controls, while providing hands-on leadership to the Accounting staff. The Assistant Controller is a trusted partner to the Controller and steps into that capacity when called upon.

Key Responsibilities

•          Manage the general ledger, account reconciliations, and review of journal entries

•          Contribute to financial reporting deliverables, including variance analysis and reporting packages for leadership

•          Provide day-to-day leadership and mentorship to the Senior Accounting team, guiding complex accounting matters and supporting career growth

•          Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycle, delivering accurate, GAAP-compliant financial statements on schedule

•          Partner across departments on accounting initiatives and process improvement projects

•          Support the development and ongoing monitoring of departmental budgets and forecasts

•          Serve as a key point of contact for external auditors, coordinating requests and preparing supporting schedules

•          Strengthen and uphold internal control processes that safeguard company assets and ensure policy compliance

•          Monitor developments in accounting standards and regulatory requirements, briefing the Controller as needed

Qualifications

•          Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline; public accounting background a plus

•          5+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including at least 2 years leading or supervising a team with strong working knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards

•          Hands-on experience with ERP platforms (such as NetSuite, Sage Intacct, SAP, or comparable systems) and strong Excel skills

•          Strong analytical, organizational, and communication abilities

•          Comfortable managing multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-moving environment

•          Background in wine or hospitality is a plus, as is familiarity with direct-to-consumer (D2C) sales models

•          Base salary in the $115-130K range, plus bonus
