Job description

Cottage House is a high-volume Ethiopian restaurant and lounge in the heart of Georgetown, with a full dining room, downstairs bar, and Upstairs at Cottage lounge featuring live music, comedy, and karaoke nights. We're looking for a reliable, hard-working Porter/Dishwasher to keep our kitchen and back-of-house running clean, stocked, and safe during fast-paced service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Wash dishes, glassware, flatware, pots, and kitchen equipment quickly and to sanitation standard using the dish machine and by hand
  • Maintain a constant supply of clean dishware and utensils for both kitchen and bar during service
  • Sweep, mop, and maintain cleanliness of kitchen floors, walk-ins, dish pit, and BOH common areas throughout each shift
  • Empty and manage trash and recycling; break down boxes and maintain a clean loading/receiving area
  • Break down and deep-clean kitchen equipment, prep stations, and floor drains per closing checklist
  • Restock kitchen paper goods, gloves, and cleaning supplies as needed
  • Assist kitchen staff with basic prep tasks, food storage, and organization when needed
  • Receive and help store vendor deliveries
  • Follow all DC health code and food safety standards
  • Report equipment issues, maintenance needs, or safety hazards to a manager immediately
  • Support opening and closing side work per posted checklists

Qualifications

  • Prior porter, dishwasher, or BOH experience preferred but not required — will train
  • Able to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-volume kitchen environment
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Team player with a strong work ethic and attention to cleanliness
  • Basic English communication skills; bilingual (Amharic or Spanish) a plus

Physical Requirements

  • Able to stand for extended periods (up to 8 hours)
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs regularly
  • Comfortable working around heat, steam, and industrial dish equipment
  • Able to bend, kneel, and reach for cleaning and stocking tasks
