The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system's 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
New York City has approximately 140,000 catch basins, 114,000 hydrants, 90,000 valves, 14 gatehouses, 3 reservoirs, 68 groundwater wells, a 100 million gallon underground storage tank and 7,000 miles each of both sanitary sewers and water mains. The responsibility of maintaining these vast networks falls under the Department of Environmental Protection's Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO).
The primary responsibilities of the Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations are: the operation, maintenance and protection of the City's drinking water and wastewater collection (sewer) systems; the protection of adjacent waterways; and the development and protection of the Department's Capital Water and Sewer Design Program. The Bureau also approves and inspects water and sewer connections performed by licensed plumbers and/or authorized contractors. In addition, the Bureau has overall responsibility for the approval and inspection of all public and private construction projects which could impact on the City's water or sewer systems.
The Bureau of Water & Sewer Operations seeks to hire one (1) motivated Assistant Civil Engineer for Collection Systems Investigation Unit within the Division of Construction Management.
The Assistant Civil Engineer will be responsible for overseeing and inspecting construction of water mains, sewers and roadway work to ensure conformance with specifications, standards, and contract drawings. In addition, they will be responsible for providing daily reports on contractor work activities, ensuring that contract work is performed in a timely manner and the necessary funding is available, and details are accurate and up to date.
As an Assistant Civil Engineer, candidate will:
- Conduct and track in-office and field investigations to determine the causes of sewer related issues.
- Monitor's daily operations to ensure contract compliance
- Participate in and supervise maintenance operations of public sewers, analysis on findings, and prepare recommendations for alterations and repairs to resolve sewer related issues.
- Make determination of sewer conditions for house connections and main lines in the citywide sewer system.
- Be responsible for the management of projects' data, such as complaints, surveys, breaksheets, dye tests, video records, reports, etc.
- Prepare and review payments, change orders, and claims for multiple contracts.
- Coordinate and schedule contractor work according to agency priorities.
- Perform routine duties in approved manner, and making sure pertinent information is reported to the
supervisor properly and timely.
- Report daily assignments and activities accurately and in a timely fashion.
- Attend mandatory (or, if needed, voluntary) training to improve professional knowledge and acquire
skills (inclusive of computer software) in order to increase overall quality and productivity of work.

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a Master's degree from an accredited college in civil engineering.
