Job Summary

The Installation Apprentice will work closely with the foreman, aiding during new installations, service work, and preventative maintenance. The Installation Apprentice will learn various areas of Gate and Systems installation, including new installations, repairs, preventative maintenance, estimate order quantities, and welding.

Essential Duties and Functions

  • Assists in the installation and service of all makes and models of gate operators, telephone entry systems, card readers, gate hardware and access control – related equipment.
  • Trench/excavate and lay conduit.
  • Assist in pulling and connecting electrical wire (both current carrying and data).
  • Assist in saw cutting asphalt/concrete drives and curbs, and seal saw cuts.
  • Mix and finish concrete.
  • Assist in welding, install plated angle iron track, hang new and existing gates, and straighten bent gates.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose failed access control equipment in the field.
  • Assist in the installation of new access control equipment.
  • Safely works with low voltage, 110-volt single phase up to and including 480-volt three phase circuits, wiring and electrical panels.
  • Learn to program Telephone Entry Systems, Keypads, and card readers.
  • Document jobsite progress by taking pictures before and after work and uploading them into ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • Previous electrical training or certification or 1 year of electrical experience.
  • Previous welding experience highly preferred.
  • Some knowledge of gates, doors, or system automation.

  • Excellent documentation and communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Communicate easily and confidently with customers, Foreman, Project/Service Manager, Owners, employees, vendors, and sub-contractors.
  • Able to take directions from Foreman and work well with Project/Service Manager and others.
  • Able to follow GPS routing system
  • Able to lift, push, pull 70 pounds.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug test, medical fit for duty examination, and continued random drug testing.
  • Maintain a Valid and unrestricted CA driver’s license and an insurable driving record.

Work Environment

The physical environment for this position includes construction sites, warehouses, and outdoor customer locations. Frequently required to use and promote use of personal protective equipment to prevent injury.

Travel Required

  • Frequent day travel to and from job sites, vendor locations, and offices.
