Description of responsibilities:
This entry level position is responsible for semi-skilled work involving the operation, construction, and maintenance of the water distribution system. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Field Services Supervisor or other Division Management, as required.
Normal work hours are on weekdays from 7:00 A.M. - 3:30 P.M., 7:30 A.M. - 4:00 P.M. and from 6:00 A.M. - 2:30 P.M. during the summer. Employee may be required to work for extended periods of time, sometimes beyond the normal 8-hour shift. Must be able to respond to call-outs at night and on weekends, holidays and emergencies as required.
  • Perform excavation and restoration of streets and sidewalks as required.
  • Operate equipment such as jackhammers, earth tampers, pumps, generators, compressors and tapping machines
  • Assist in laying, servicing, and repairing water mains and service lines and perform maintenance, repair, and installation of valves, fire hydrants, water meters, and MXUs
  • Load and unload materials and equipment (up to 200 lbs. with assistance)
  • Set up and assist with the use of rescue retrieval systems
  • Perform customer service-related field duties, including opening/closing curb valves, meter setting/removal, special meter readings, and leak inspections
  • Conduct fire hydrant flow testing
  • Enter and exit ditches and confined spaces to perform repair and maintenance work
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Required experience:
  • Minimum of one (1) year of practical experience in installing, maintaining, and repairing water mains and appurtenances
  • Experience working in construction, utilities, public works, or a related field
  • Experience operating hand tools, power tools, and mechanical equipment
  • Experience with backhoe operation preferred
  • Or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Required skills:
  • Knowledge of water distribution system construction, operation, maintenance, and repair practices
  • Ability to operate specialized industry equipment safely and effectively
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports manually and using computer software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Access)
  • Ability to recognize hazards and respond appropriately to alarms and emergency situations
  • Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including inclement weather
Required Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License, Class C.
