What are some typical challenges faced by an Asset Reliability Manager, and how are they addressed within an industrial environment?

Asset Reliability Managers often face challenges such as equipment downtime, aging infrastructure, and balancing maintenance costs with production needs. To address these issues, they implement predictive and preventive maintenance strategies, analyze failure data, and collaborate closely with maintenance, operations, and engineering teams. Regular communication, use of reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) techniques, and leveraging data analytics tools help ensure assets perform optimally while minimizing unplanned outages. Proactive problem-solving and cross-functional teamwork are essential for success in this role.

What does an Asset Reliability Manager do?

An Asset Reliability Manager is responsible for ensuring that a company's physical assets, such as machinery and equipment, operate efficiently and reliably. They develop and implement maintenance strategies, analyze asset performance data, and lead initiatives to reduce downtime and extend equipment lifespan. Their work helps organizations minimize costs, improve safety, and optimize productivity by preventing unexpected equipment failures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Asset Reliability Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Asset Reliability Manager, you need a strong background in engineering, maintenance strategies, and reliability-centered maintenance, often supported by a relevant degree and certifications such as CMRP (Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional). Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), root cause analysis tools, and condition monitoring technologies is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help in coordinating teams and promoting a culture of continuous improvement. These skills and qualifications are crucial for maximizing asset uptime, reducing costs, and ensuring operational efficiency.

THE POSITION

Reporting to the Director, Operations Engineering, the Manager, Asset Management & Reliability leads Keyera's Asset Management & Reliability (AMR) function and partners closely with Operations to operationalize the approved Maintenance & Reliability (M&R) Strategy across a diverse portfolio of midstream assets.

This role helps Operations optimize asset performance by providing enterprise program design, standards, methodologies, KPI frameworks, assurance, training content, and subject matter expertise - while Operations owns site execution, local adoption, and results.

The Manager, AMR works closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Integrity, Projects, Supply Chain, Technical Services, and Information Technology to strengthen maintenance and reliability practices across the organization and to advance a more proactive, data-driven reliability culture.

This role builds on the AMR foundations already established at Keyera, including maintenance work management, planning and scheduling, PM program foundations, maintenance technology standardization, condition-based maintenance, and bad actor management, and helps mature the next phase of M&R capability across the business.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Lead and develop a high-performing team of reliability SME's, asset management specialists, and analysts.
  • Build strong partnerships with Operations leaders and site teams to support implementation of Keyera's approved M&R Strategy in a fit-for-purpose way across assets and operating regions.
  • Foster strong cross-functional relationships with Maintenance, Engineering, Integrity, Projects, Supply Chain, Technical Services, Information Technology, and leadership teams.
  • Influence stakeholders and build alignment around maintenance and reliability priorities, standards, expectations, and improvement opportunities.
  • Support organizational change by helping build field ownership, capability, and adoption of AMR processes and practices within Operations.

AMR Strategy Enablement

  • Lead the ongoing implementation and evolution of Keyera's approved M&R Strategy in alignment with Operations and Operations Engineering priorities.
  • Partner with Operations to embed the M&R Strategy into site-level plans that reflect facility needs, maturity, and priorities.
  • Help translate strategy into practical tools, expectations, and priorities that can be adopted and sustained at the site level.
  • Support Operations in improving asset performance, maintenance effectiveness, reliability maturity, and long-term asset value.

Program Design, Governance & Assurance

  • Lead AMR program design, governance, methodologies, standards, assurance, training content, KPI frameworks, and maintenance technology/configuration standards.
  • Provide governance, SME, and assurance support to improve the quality and consistency of maintenance and reliability execution across operating units.
  • Build on Keyera's existing AMR foundations, including enterprise-wide planning and scheduling, standardized maintenance work processes, PM program foundations, asset information standards, and standardized maintenance technology.
  • Support integration of AMR requirements into MOC, projects, and lifecycle planning to strengthen asset readiness and long-term performance.

Reliability & Maintenance Program Maturity

  • Continue maturing key AMR programs and priorities, including planning and scheduling optimization, maintenance assurance, PM optimization, condition monitoring, bad actor management, front line defect elimination, integrated work, maintenance technology optimization, and reliability-centered design.
  • Identify and prioritize opportunities to reduce unplanned downtime, improve maintenance efficiency, strengthen reliability, and support a shift from reactive to proactive maintenance.
  • Provide technical leadership and support related to reliability engineering, maintenance optimization, asset health, and lifecycle planning in collaboration with Operations and other stakeholders.
  • Advance reporting, KPIs, and data-driven insights that help Operations track implementation, adoption, effectiveness, and value delivery of AMR priorities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical discipline preferred; equivalent technical education and progressive experience in Operations, Maintenance, Reliability, or Asset Management.
  • Professional designation or technical certification such as P.Eng., Engineering Technologist, Power Engineer, or Journeyperson certification is considered an asset.

Experience

  • 10-15+ years of progressive experience in Asset Management, Reliability Engineering, Maintenance Management, Operations Engineering, Midstream Operations, or related industrial environments.
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership experience leading technical, maintenance, reliability, or engineering teams.
  • Strong understanding of asset management, maintenance, reliability, asset integrity, and lifecycle management principles.
  • Experience developing, implementing, or maturing maintenance and reliability strategies, frameworks, programs, or management systems.
  • Experience working closely with Operations and Maintenance teams to improve execution, capability, and results through influence and partnership, with a willingness to travel to operating sites to support implementation and stay connected to field execution.
  • Experience establishing or improving standards, methodologies, governance, assurance practices, KPI frameworks, and maintenance or reliability reporting processes.
  • Proven ability to build, develop, and lead high-performing technical teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence without direct authority and build alignment across diverse stakeholder groups and operating regions.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to balance safety, risk, reliability, cost, operational performance, and long-term asset value.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to translate strategy into practical, site-level improvement.
