Job description

Facilities Locator or Ops Tech I

Great Lakes Energy is seeking a Facilities Locator or Operations Technician I to join our team in the Waters service area. This essential role ensures safety and operational efficiency by locating and marking underground facilities in response to MISS DIG notifications and protecting critical infrastructure.

Who We Are

For over 85 years, Great Lakes Energy has powered rural communities across 26 counties in western and northern Michigan. As the third-largest Michigan-based electric utility and the state's largest member-owned power company, we serve over 128,000 meters with pride. Beyond delivering reliable electricity, we are leaders in advanced fiber technology through Truestream, our communication solutions subsidiary.

At Great Lakes Energy, we prioritize enriching the lives of our community members and employees. With over 300 team members, we're more than just colleagues-we're a close-knit family, united by a shared vision of growth, innovation, and community service.

A Day in The Life

As a Facilities Locator, you play a vital role in ensuring safe and efficient operations. Your day involves processing MISS DIG requests, locate and mark underground facilities, prioritize emergency locates, and track activities for future reference.

You respond to inquiries from contractors, members, and the public, manage locator equipment, and monitor paint and flag inventory, ensuring supplies are restocked as needed. During storm events, you assist with recovery efforts and support Engineering and GIS staff with field checks or mapping tasks. Every action you take helps safeguard infrastructure and maintain service reliability for the community.

Who You Are

You are a self-starter who thrives in both independent and team settings. You take pride in your work and can confidently represent the company to contractors and members. With a strong sense of responsibility, you manage and prioritize a variety of tasks, always staying focused on safety and efficiency. You are detail-oriented and comfortable working outdoors, where you can apply your technical skills to support daily operations and respond to emergency needs.

You are proficient in facilities locating and marking under the MISS DIG system, with the ability to interpret and navigate maps to plan and analyze routes. You have a solid understanding of electrical technology and electric distribution systems, with at least one year of related experience-or equivalent education. If this sounds like you, we would love to hear from you.

What's in It for You?

We believe our people are our greatest asset and our benefits reflect that. From the expected to the exceptional, our offerings are designed to support you and your family at every stage of life. We provide a well-rounded package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, paid time off, parental leave, adoption assistance, tuition reimbursement, life insurance, and robust retirement plans – just to name a few.
