What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in asset backed securitization, and how can they be managed?

Professionals in asset backed securitization often encounter challenges such as managing complex deal structures, ensuring regulatory compliance, and conducting thorough due diligence on underlying assets. Staying up to date with evolving regulations and market standards is crucial, as is clear communication with cross-functional teams like legal, risk, and analytics. Building strong project management skills and maintaining meticulous documentation can help mitigate risks and ensure successful execution of securitization transactions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Asset Backed Securitization professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in Asset Backed Securitization (ABS), you need strong analytical skills, a background in finance or accounting, and knowledge of structured finance principles, often supported by a relevant degree or CFA certification. Familiarity with financial modeling tools like Excel, data analysis software, and securitization platforms is typically required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities are critical soft skills for managing complex transactions and collaborating with stakeholders. These skills ensure accurate structuring, risk assessment, and successful execution of ABS deals in a highly regulated, detail-oriented environment.

What is asset backed securitization?

Asset backed securitization (ABS) is a financial process where pools of financial assets, such as loans, leases, credit card debt, or receivables, are bundled together and sold as securities to investors. The cash flows from these underlying assets are used to pay interest and principal to the investors. ABS provides liquidity to lenders, allowing them to remove assets from their balance sheets and free up capital for more lending. It also offers investors exposure to diversified pools of assets and varying risk profiles. However, ABS can be complex and comes with certain risks that investors should understand.

Job description

Team Description
Asset-Backed Securitization & Financing ("ABS&F") structures and executes Asset-Backed Securitizations (ABS) and lending facilities across a wide range of consumer and commercial asset classes including automobile and equipment loans, leases, and floorplan, consumer and commercial credit cards, industrial transportation assets (aviation, rail and containers), student loans, personal loans, SME loans, solar loan and leases, home improvement loans, handset receivables, digital infrastructure and other esoteric asset classes.
ABS&F offers our clients the ability to monetize stable, recurring asset cash flows through bankruptcy-remote vehicles. Transactions are executed both in the capital markets (where Citi places the financings with institutional investors) and lending facilities funded through Citi's commercial paper conduits and balance sheet.
ABS&F offers a unique perspective as an underwriter of capital markets transactions, as well as credit analyst for lending transactions. ABS&F also advises clients on balance sheet management, transaction execution and often provides secured financing and advice in conjunction with event driven transactions including M&As and restructurings.
Our clients include leading captive and independent financial companies, banks, and corporates - both in the US and abroad. Our group regularly collaborates with analytics, trading, sales, syndicate, derivatives, corporate banking and investment banking professionals across the organization. Members of our securitization team are located in various cities around the world including New York, Hong Kong, London and Sydney. Citi is a market leader in both traditional and non-traditional ABS asset classes and is consistently a top ranked practitioner in the market.

  • Lead the end-to-end execution of financing transactions, from initial pitch and mandate through to structuring, documentation, and closing.
  • Oversee the preparation of detailed financial models, credit analysis, and due diligence on underlying asset pools.
  • Structure transactions to meet client objectives while optimizing for credit, legal, regulatory, and rating agency considerations.
  • Lead the negotiation of term sheets, credit agreements, and other legal documentation in partnership with internal and external counsel
  • Seamlessly integrate capital markets and balance sheet lending solutions to provide clients with a holistic financing offering.
  • Collaborate closely with internal partners, including sales, trading, syndicate, and credit risk management, to ensure successful transaction execution and distribution.
  • Stay current with market trends, competitive landscape, and regulatory changes to inform strategy and identify new product opportunities.
  • Contribute to the strategic direction and growth of the Asset-Backed Securitization and Financing business.
  • Mentor, train, and guide junior members of the team, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
  • Represent the firm at industry conferences and client events to enhance our market presence and brand.
