General Description. A Quality Control Technician is an hourly-rated skilled craft position that performs on construction projects any combination of the duties described more fully, below. A Quality Control Technician typically performs a wide variety of tasks, transferring from one task to another as the work flow dictates.
Key Duties.
  • Follow the directions and instructions of the Laboratory Manager and the Quality Control Manager.
  • Conduct sampling in accordance with AASHTO R 66.
  • Perform daily equipment verifications as instructed by the Laboratory Manager.
  • Perform or assist in performing all necessary equipment calibrations as directed by the Laboratory Manager.
  • Testing of samples in accordance with applicable specifications, QC Plan and Quality Management System requirements.
  • Care and maintenance of all laboratory equipment and inventory.
  • Keeping the laboratory in a neat, clean and orderly fashion.
  • Accurate reporting of test results on their proper forms.
  • Completion of all documentation used to report test results (i.e. - worksheets, sample and test logs, Certificate of Analysis, etc.).
  • Disposal of waste material upon completion of testing.
  • Assist plant personnel during batch production as necessary to insure product quality control objectives are met (process control testing).
  • Communicating batch test results and certifications to plant personnel
  • Assist the Laboratory Manager in meeting compliance reporting requirements timelines as outlined in the QC plans and Quality Management System.
  • Assist other technicians and employees if needed
  • Attend and complete training as required (company, certification, etc.).
  • Other activities as assigned by the laboratory manager

    Education and Experience.
  2. Existing VDOT Asphalt Plant II and VDOT Asphalt Field II credentials preferred
  3. This position typically is not an entry-level job, as it requires demonstrable previous experience as a Laboratory Technician.
  4. Working proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
  5. Familiarity with AASHTO and ASTM specifications for asphalt emulsions, asphalt materials and testing.
  6. Possess a working understanding of statistical process control.
  7. Ethical professional and behavioral standards.

  8. Physical Demands. The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Laboratory Technician to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  9. Constant physical effort, including standing, is required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day.
  10. Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.

  11. Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that a Laboratory Technician encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
  12. Work is performed predominantly indoors.
  13. Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.

  14. Demonstrates Safety 1st. It is important for members of our team to be actively involved in their own safety, while being considerate of fellow employees.
  15. Assess work environment for possible hazards and makes sure training is adequate to the task.
  16. Has proper personal protective equipment and tools, uses them appropriately for the given task.

  18. Identifies and turns in near miss reports
  19. Asks for help, when needed, to perform tasks safely.
