Job Summary:
The Phlebotomy Operations Manager is responsible for oversight of laboratory-provided phlebotomy services delivered in outpatient care settings supported by the laboratory. This role ensures high-quality specimen collection, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and a positive patient experience. The Phlebotomy Operations Manager leads and supports phlebotomy staff manage day-to-day service delivery. This individual collaborates with laboratory leadership and clinical partners to support diagnostic testing services nationally. This position is hands-on and patient and client focused, with primary accountability for staff performance, service quality, and compliance with laboratory standards across supported locations.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee daily laboratory-provided phlebotomy and operational services across client locations
  • Ensure safe, accurate specimen collection, labeling, handling, and transport in accordance with laboratory policies and regulatory requirements
  • Monitor patient flow, specimen integrity, and service quality
  • Adjust staffing assignments and workflows to meet service needs and laboratory expectations
  • Perform phlebotomy duties as needed to support continuity of care and service delivery in instances where backup phlebotomy services are necessary
  • This individual will play an integral role in supporting phlebotomy operational workflows for all CKD programs and initiatives
Quality, Compliance and Patient/Client Experience:
  • Ensure phlebotomy services comply with laboratory standards, safety requirements, and applicable regulations governing specimen collection and pre-analytic processes
  • Monitor quality indicators, audit findings, incident reports, and patient feedback related to phlebotomy services
  • Investigate service issues or complaints and implement corrective actions in collaboration with laboratory leadership and clinical partners to improve quality and patient experience
Leadership, Training and Competency:
  • Directly supervise a growing phlebotomy team and workflow assigned to supported care settings
  • Develop and manage staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage
  • Monitor attendance, performance expectations, and service reliability
  • Complete performance evaluations and provide coaching, counseling, and corrective action
  • Promote a professional, respectful, and service-oriented workforce that represents the laboratory appropriately
  • Manage contingency coverage plans either through backup phlebotomist or designated vendors as necessary
  • Ensure all phlebotomy staff receive appropriate initial and ongoing training to perform safely and independently in supported care environments
  • Oversee orientation and competency assessment in specimen collection techniques, patient identification, infection prevention, professionalism, and laboratory policies
  • Maintain required training and competency documentation
  • Provide remedial training as needed to address performance or compliance gaps. Serve as a technical and procedural resource to staff
Collaboration and Communication:
  • Serve as the primary laboratory contact for phlebotomy-related service issues within supported environments
  • Collaborate with laboratory leadership, providers, nursing representatives, patient access, information systems, and logistics teams to support accurate ordering, specimen handling, transport, and result reporting
  • Communicate laboratory expectations, policies, and operational updates clearly to phlebotomy staff. Address service concerns promptly to maintain trust and service continuity
Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor's degree preferred
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred
  • Minimum 3-5 years of phlebotomy experience
  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience required
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills
  • Ability to lead teams working independently across multiple care environments
  • Knowledge of laboratory specimen collection standards and regulatory requirements
  • Advanced understanding of Patient Experience & Professional Conduct
  • Deep knowledge of Phlebotomy Quality & Safety
  • Strong leadership acumen
  • Highly motivated and collaborative individual
  • Must be willing to travel to client sites as necessary
  • Ability to pivot direction quickly
  • As needed, may be required to travel to client locations for initial launch as well as ongoing compliance audits as necessary
Compensation:
  • $90,000-$110,000
