JOB SUMMARY 

Responsible for performing OR nursing duties accurately and efficiently according to established policies.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Detect early signs and symptoms of intra-operative complications and report observations promptly to the proper physician to prevent surgical harm or injury to the patient. 
  • Administer medications according to ASC policies.
  • Anticipates needs of the surgical team and has adequate supplies and equipment available and in working condition.
  • Follow proper procedure to report damaged equipment / instrumentation.
  • Maintain a safe and quiet environment for the patients and clinical staff.
  • Perform treatments and procedures according to ASC policies and procedures, physician's orders, and questions unclear orders.
  • Initiate nurse-physician communication as appropriate to include updating the surgeon's preference cards during the case, as well as communicating new physician preferences to the Charge Nurse. 
  • Provide instructions to patients, family members, and significant others as appropriate.
  • Assist Anesthesia personnel with induction and patient transfer to PACU. Is responsible for expedient turnovers between cases.
  • Serve as a resource person for updating or improving patient care practices and as a preceptor when the need arises.
  • Document in writing the specifics of performance during codes and convey this information to the OR Charge Nurse.
  • Document in a clear, concise, accurate and legible manner, all subjective information to communicate the patient's progress based on the established plan of care.
  • Assist with the change process involved in implementing new forms with the OR by selecting and initiating appropriate forms at appropriate times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS 

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. 
  • Must be licensed by the State of Florida as a Registered Nurse (RN) and maintain licensure prior to hire and/or transfer and throughout employment in an RN position.
  • Must hold and maintain ACLS/BLS/PALS certification within 30 days of employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Display customer services skills, strong interpersonal skills, close attention to detail, and excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Be a person of integrity and character, willing to embrace change and make a positive impact in the lives of patients and co-workers.

  • Proficient in OR procedures.
  • Ability to work in close proximity with co-workers and maintain a professional attitude.
  • Displays computer proficiency (i.e., PC windows and MS Office environment) and ability to quickly learn new applications.
  • Proficient in use of English language both in written and verbal communication. 
  • Must be able to communicate with individuals of varying socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Displays ability of giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Professional demeanor and recognition of privacy considerations for patients and families.
