As9102 information

What is the difference between As9102 vs AS9100?

AspectAs9102AS9100
PurposeFirst Article Inspection (FAI) reporting for aerospace partsQuality management system standard for aerospace organizations
FocusProduct conformity and inspection dataOverall quality management and process control
CertificationNot a certification, but a reporting requirementCertification for organizations
Work EnvironmentInspection and quality assurance teamsQuality management and compliance teams

While As9102 focuses on reporting the first article inspection data for aerospace parts, AS9100 is a comprehensive quality management system standard for aerospace organizations. Both are essential in aerospace quality assurance but serve different purposes: As9102 ensures product conformity, whereas AS9100 certifies the organization's quality processes.

What are AS9102 inspectors?

AS9102 inspectors are quality professionals responsible for ensuring that aerospace parts and assemblies meet the requirements of the AS9102 standard, which governs First Article Inspection (FAI) in the aerospace industry. Their main job is to verify that manufactured products conform to customer specifications and regulatory standards by reviewing documentation, conducting measurements, and completing FAI reports. AS9102 inspectors play a critical role in maintaining product quality, traceability, and compliance in aerospace manufacturing.

What are some common challenges faced by AS9102 Inspectors when performing First Article Inspections in aerospace manufacturing?

AS9102 Inspectors often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex engineering drawings, ensuring all documentation is complete and accurate, and coordinating with multiple departments to gather necessary data. Additionally, tight production schedules can create pressure to complete inspections quickly without compromising quality. Effective communication and attention to detail are essential, as inspectors must collaborate closely with engineers, production teams, and quality managers to resolve discrepancies and ensure compliance with aerospace standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AS9102 Quality Inspector, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AS9102 Quality Inspector, you need a strong understanding of aerospace quality standards, experience with inspection procedures, and familiarity with AS9102 First Article Inspection requirements. Proficiency in using measurement instruments, quality management systems (QMS), and specialized software for documentation is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills are important soft skills for this role. These capabilities ensure compliance with aerospace industry standards, minimize defects, and maintain high product quality and safety.

Our team comprises passionate professionals dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in aerospace and defense.

Position Overview:

The successful candidate will be responsible for programming and operating Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) using PC-DMIS software to inspect high-precision parts per MIL-STD and AS9102 standards. You will lead the execution and documentation of First Article Inspections (FAIs) for both internal manufacturing and external suppliers in support of Department of Defense and other USG programs. The ideal candidate has strong dimensional inspection skills, an in-depth understanding of engineering drawings, advanced level GD&T, and a strong commitment to zero-defect quality that is critical to ensuring that our products meet the stringent quality standards required for defense applications. You will be responsible for conducting inspections, and evaluations of materials, components, and finished products to verify compliance with contract specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements. You will have access to a Hexagon Global CMMs and a Romer Absolute Arm to help aid in inspecting a large array of products from both suppliers and internal manufacturing.

Key Job Duties:

  1. Program, set up, and operate CMMs using PC-DMIS to measure complex parts to print, model, and customer requirements.
  2. Perform and document First Article Inspections (FAIs) in accordance with AS9102 and contract-specific requirements.
  3. Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and 3D CAD models to determine appropriate inspection methods.
  4. Support and validate in-process and final inspections using both manual and automated metrology tools.
  5. Maintain traceable and auditable records of inspection results in accordance with QMS and DoD compliance standards.
  6. Collaborate with Engineering, Production, and Supply Chain teams to resolve dimensional and process non-conformances.
  7. Support root cause and corrective action (RCCA) processes for dimensional non-conformances.
  8. Assist in development of inspection plans and control documentation.
  9. Maintain and calibrate metrology equipment, ensuring proper use and upkeep.
  10. Comply with all company safety, quality, and security procedures including ITAR and DFARS flow downs.

Experience/Skills Requirements:
