What is the job outlook for careers in artificial intelligence?

The job outlook for careers in artificial intelligence is excellent. Over the next few decades, AI is expected to grow explosively as it becomes capable of accomplishing more tasks. With this growth comes the need for information technology experts to determine how and where to implement artificial intelligence at various companies. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics expects computer occupations to increase by about 13% between 2016 and 2026. This is almost twice the average growth rate for all trades. Not all of these jobs involve artificial intelligence, but many of them do, and that number should increase over time.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in artificial intelligence roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Artificial Intelligence often face challenges such as keeping up with rapidly evolving technologies, managing large and complex datasets, and ensuring the ethical use of AI systems. Collaboration with data engineers, domain experts, and ethicists is crucial to overcome these hurdles. Continuous learning through courses, workshops, and industry conferences helps AI specialists stay updated, while strong communication skills aid in translating technical findings for stakeholders and integrating AI solutions effectively into business processes.

What is the difference between Artificial Intelligence vs Data Scientist?

AspectArtificial IntelligenceData Scientist
Required CredentialsTypically degrees in Computer Science, AI, or related fields; certifications in machine learning or AI toolsDegrees in Statistics, Computer Science, or related fields; certifications in data analysis or machine learning
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, tech companies, AI startups, often focused on developing algorithms and modelsBusiness environments, analytics firms, tech companies, focusing on data analysis and insights
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across tech, healthcare, finance, and automotive industries for developing intelligent systemsUsed in finance, marketing, healthcare, and tech for data analysis, predictive modeling, and decision support

Both roles require strong technical skills, but AI emphasizes developing models, whereas Data Scientists focus on interpreting data to inform decisions.

What is an entry-level job in artificial intelligence?

An entry-level job in artificial intelligence typically involves roles such as AI analyst, data analyst, or junior machine learning engineer. These positions often require foundational knowledge of programming languages like Python, basic understanding of machine learning concepts, and sometimes a relevant degree or certification. They provide opportunities to gain practical experience and develop skills in AI development and data analysis.

This role is particularly well suited for someone who has built complex programs from the ground up and someone who understands how to define requirements, establish processes, coordinate across large organizations, and create repeatable, scalable frameworks.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and operationalization of artificial intelligence (AI) governance program infrastructure including intake processes, use case review workflows, risk tiering criteria, escalation paths, and approval frameworks

  • Develop and release enterprise artificial intelligence (AI) policies, standards, and guidelines for responsible artificial intelligence (AI) use across all business units, ensuring they are practical, enforceable, and grounded in technical reality

  • Conduct and coordinate artificial intelligence (AI) risk assessments across use cases and technologies, identifying risks, defining mitigation strategies, and tracking compliance actions through closure

  • Evaluate artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and vendor-supplied models, including generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems, for alignment with responsible artificial intelligence (AI) standards, identifying vulnerabilities and failure modes

  • Monitor applicable legislation and regulatory guidance, including National Institute of Standards and Technology Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Framework (NIST AI RMF), Department of Defense Artificial Intelligence Ethics Principles (DoD AI Ethics Principles), European Union Artificial Intelligence Act (EU AI Act), and United States (U.S.) federal artificial intelligence policy, and develop organizational readiness assessments for new requirements

  • Define documentation standards for artificial intelligence (AI) systems such as model cards, impact assessments, validation records, human oversight requirements, and ensure audit-readiness across the artificial intelligence (AI) portfolio

  • Build and deliver artificial intelligence (AI) governance training and awareness materials for technical and non-technical stakeholders across the enterprise

  • Collaborate with engineering, legal, compliance, cybersecurity, and business partners to integrate governance requirements into artificial intelligence (AI) program delivery processes

  • Contribute to the development of enterprise artificial intelligence (AI) governance metrics, key performance indicators (KPI), and executive reporting on program maturity and risk posture

BasicQualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • 5+ years of experience in systems engineering, systems integration, and/or software engineering

  • 5+ years of experience with program management, project management and/or business operations

  • 3+ years of experience in Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance

  • 5+ years of experience in performing risk assessments and risk management

  • 5+ years of experience working in a cross functional environment with all levels in the business from individual contributors to executive leadership

  • 3+ years of experience in design, requirements derivation and/or system architecture development and processes

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work or military experience

  • Current INCOSE systems engineering certification or equivalent professional credential

  • Experience with technical concepts related to AI/ML systems without necessarily being a model developer

  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or national security environments with familiarity with DoD acquisition, program oversight, or compliance processes

  • Experience with AI technologies: machine learning, deep learning, generative AI, and agentic systems at a conceptual and applied level

  • Experience with NIST AI RMF, ISO 42001, DoD AI Ethics Principles, EU AI Act, or equivalent governance frameworks

  • Experience using GRC platforms (ServiceNow, Archer, OneTrust, Credo AI or similar) to manage risk and compliance workflows

  • Experience with AI technology and a track record of staying current on emerging capabilities and their implications for complex organizations
