What is an area operations manager?

Area Operations Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the daily operations of multiple locations or branches within a designated geographic area. They ensure that each site meets organizational standards for productivity, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. Their duties often include managing staff, implementing company policies, monitoring budgets, and optimizing operational processes. Area Operations Managers also serve as a key communication link between upper management and individual site managers, ensuring that corporate strategies are effectively executed across all locations.

How does an area operations manager balance overseeing multiple locations while ensuring consistent operational standards?

Area Operations Managers are responsible for maintaining high standards across several sites, which requires frequent travel, strong organizational skills, and effective delegation. They often rely on regular site visits, performance tracking, and close collaboration with location managers to identify issues and implement best practices. Leveraging digital tools for real-time reporting and communication helps ensure that policies and procedures are consistently followed. Building strong relationships with on-site teams and providing ongoing support are key to achieving operational consistency and addressing challenges promptly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an area operations manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Area Operations Manager, you need strong leadership, organizational, and analytical skills, often supported by a degree in business administration or a related field. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, budget management tools, and supply chain software is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability help drive team performance and resolve operational challenges. These competencies ensure efficient operations, achievement of business targets, and effective oversight of multiple locations.

Area Manager Soul Foods Group - KFC

South West Ontario - London

About the Company

In Canada, Soul Restaurants Canada operates over 230 restaurants and stores, employing more than 4,000 people. Our business continues to grow rapidly through new development and acquisitions, creating exciting opportunities for strong leaders.

About the Role

As a highly motivated people leader, you will oversee a team of up to 10 Restaurant General Managers, building strong talent pipelines and developing leaders who deliver an exceptional employee and guest experience.

This role is not a Monday–Friday office job — it requires a flexible schedule that includes evenings and weekends, with the majority of your time spent in restaurants, coaching your restaurant leaders and helping them grow their teams and their businesses.

Responsibilities

  • Coach and develop your leadership pipeline, ensuring all restaurants are fully staffed with trained, engaged teams.
  • Provide daily leadership, direction, and support to your RGMs and their teams.
  • Drive sales and profitability across your area by identifying opportunities to strengthen operational performance.
  • Champion community involvement and encourage your teams to be active, positive contributors to the neighbourhoods they serve.
  • Ensure all restaurants consistently uphold brand standards and deliver an outstanding guest experience every visit.

Qualifications & Required Skills

  • Ideally educated at the post-secondary level, with proven multi-unit leadership experience in a QSR or similar high-volume environment.
  • Demonstrated track record of personal growth and developing others.
  • High energy and exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate clearly, collaborate effectively, and use strong business acumen to influence performance.
  • Valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle.

Pay Range & Compensation

Competitive salary plus car allowance, bonus, and comprehensive benefits.
