Job description

An Area Manager for fiber optics is responsible for overseeing the planning, execution, and completion of all fiber optic network projects within a specified geographical region. The role involves coordinating multiple project teams, managing budgets, and ensuring network quality and compliance with all industry and safety standards. 
Duties and responsibilities:
  • Project and operations management: Oversee all operational activities for multiple Outside Plant (OSP) construction projects, from initial planning through execution and closeout.
  • Team leadership: Manage and provide leadership for a team of field inspectors, technicians, and construction crews, which may include managing subcontractors and vendors.
  • Safety and quality assurance: Promote safety awareness and assure compliance with all safety regulations, industry standards, and best practices for fiber optic network installations.
  • Budgeting and financial oversight: Develop, monitor, and manage project budgets, control costs, and track key performance metrics to ensure financial objectives are met or exceeded.
  • Stakeholder communication: Act as the primary point of contact for clients, internal stakeholders, and external entities such as municipalities and permitting agencies.
  • Problem-solving: Proactively identify and resolve problematic design or construction elements, troubleshoot technical network issues, and develop effective solutions.
  • Documentation and reporting: Ensure all project documentation, including work orders, progress reports, and as-built drawings, are accurately maintained and reported to senior management.
  • Permitting: Manage all permitting, inspections, and regulatory activities required for fiber optic cable installations. 
Key qualifications and skills:
  • Experience: Proven experience in operations management within the fiber, telecom, or utility industries is required, with 3–5 years typically cited.
  • Technical knowledge: Strong understanding of fiber optic technology, including network design, installation, testing (e.g., OTDR, splicing), and maintenance.
