What kind of jobs can an architect have?

Architects can work in various roles including design architects, project managers, urban planners, landscape architects, and interior designers. They often collaborate with engineers, contractors, and clients, and may work in offices, construction sites, or government agencies. Licensing and proficiency with design software like AutoCAD or Revit are typically required.

What is architecture?

Architecture is the art and science of designing and constructing buildings and other physical structures. It involves creating functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing environments that meet the needs of individuals and communities. Architects consider factors like site conditions, materials, building codes, sustainability, and client requirements when designing spaces. The field encompasses a wide range of projects, from residential homes to commercial complexes and public infrastructure.

Is architecture still in demand?

Architecture remains a steady profession with ongoing demand for designing residential, commercial, and public buildings. The field requires skills in CAD software, sustainability, and building codes, and job opportunities are influenced by economic growth and urban development trends.

What careers can you do with an architecture degree?

An architecture degree prepares individuals for careers such as licensed architect, urban planner, landscape architect, interior designer, construction manager, or architectural drafter. These roles often require knowledge of design software like AutoCAD or Revit and may involve licensing or certification processes. The degree also provides a foundation for related fields like real estate development or construction consulting.

What are some common challenges architects face when collaborating with multidisciplinary teams on large projects?

Architects often work closely with engineers, contractors, and clients, which can present challenges such as aligning design visions, managing communication, and resolving conflicts over technical or budgetary constraints. Successfully navigating these dynamics requires strong interpersonal and negotiation skills, as well as adaptability to incorporate feedback from various stakeholders. Being proactive in coordinating meetings, using collaborative design tools, and maintaining clear documentation can help streamline the process and ensure project goals are met efficiently.

What is the difference between Architecture vs Civil Engineering?

AspectArchitectureCivil Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Architecture, licensing requiredBachelor's or Master's in Civil Engineering, licensure often required
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, client meetings, construction sitesConstruction sites, design offices, infrastructure projects
Industry UsageDesigning buildings and spacesDesigning infrastructure like bridges, roads, and buildings

While both architects and civil engineers work on building projects, architects focus on the design and aesthetics of structures, ensuring functionality and visual appeal. Civil engineers handle the structural integrity, safety, and infrastructure aspects. Both roles often collaborate during construction, but their core responsibilities and credentials differ.

Are architects in demand?

Some architects, particularly naval architects and marine engineers, are in high demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for naval architects is growing at a rate of 12%, which is faster than average. The demand is due to an increased need for building ships and marine natural resource delivery systems, such as pipelines, whose structure needs to meet more rigorous environmental standards. Other architecture careers are growing about as fast as average, and the space for employment is based largely on the health of the construction industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architect, you need a strong background in design principles, spatial planning, and building codes, typically supported by a professional degree in architecture and relevant licensure. Proficiency with CAD software, BIM tools like Revit, and knowledge of sustainable design certifications such as LEED are commonly required. Outstanding communication, creativity, and project management skills help architects collaborate with clients and multidisciplinary teams. These abilities are crucial for delivering functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing buildings that meet client needs and regulatory standards.

Does it take 7 years to be an architect?

Becoming an architect typically requires about 5 to 7 years of education and training, including earning a professional degree in architecture and completing a required internship or work experience. Afterward, candidates must pass the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) to become licensed. The exact timeline can vary depending on educational paths and licensing requirements in different regions.

Job description

FreeWheel, a Comcast company, provides comprehensive ad platforms for publishers, advertisers, and media buyers. Powered by premium video content, robust data, and advanced technology, weโ€™re making it easier for buyers and sellers to transact across all screens, data types, and sales channels. As a global company, we have offices in nine countries and can insert advertisements around the world.

Job Summary

FreeWheelโ€™s Enterprise Architecture team partners closely with our Product and Engineering organizations to translate target business outcomes and client requirements into scalable product designs and technical solutions โ€“ delivered on our cloud-native platforms. You will be a strategic member of the architecture group that will provide recommendations and technology design guidance for Product Management and Technology leadership to drive smart investment across our technology portfolio. We are looking for an architect with experience in the Ad Tech industry who can quickly ramp up on our business processes, application portfolio, and data architecture โ€“ in order to develop Solution Blueprints, product-aligned Architecture Roadmaps, Reference Architectures and Extensibility Frameworks that accelerate innovation while protecting performance, reliability, security, and cost efficiency.

Core Responsibilities
  • Serve as the architecture interface between Product and Engineering, converting market and client needs into pragmatic, end-to-end solution designs for Streaming Hub (SSP/ad server), Programmatic Demand (DSP), Audience/Identity, Measurement, and Revenue Science platforms.
  • Produce Solution Blueprints, Reference Architectures, and Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) that balance speed with long-term maintainability, platform consistency, and extensibility.
  • Guide Product-aligned Architecture Roadmaps, sequencing capabilities to deliver measurable business value while reducing technical debt.
  • Provide handsโ€‘on design leadership for cloudโ€‘native (Kubernetes, microservices, data plane/control plane) systems including reliability (SLOs/SLA), observability, security, privacy, and cost controls.
  • Shape standards for data contracts, identity, consent, measurement, and programmatic interoperability across buy- and sellโ€‘side workflows.
  • Identify and lead strategic initiatives to grow our technical capability, reducing tech debt, improving software quality and velocity.
  • Establish common practices for teams to ensure end software and systems interact seamlessly with one another.
  • Advise and support leaders on technical choices and associated risks and rewards on build, buy, extend, customize and deprecate strategies; facilitate architecture reviews; and deโ€‘risk delivery with proofโ€‘ofโ€‘concepts and reference implementations.
  • Reinforce and voice support for grounding principles to ensure architecture designs are stable, secure, scalable, reusable, and operable.
  • Review and ensure Solution Designs produced both internally and by 3rd party suppliers.
  • Apply new and innovative ideas to business and technology constraints, champion diversity and innovation.
  • Develop strategies and guidelines on cloud governance, tech stack selection, capability development and systems deprecation.
Expectations
  • Operate as a productโ€‘minded architect who frames design choices in terms of client value, market differentiation, and timeโ€‘toโ€‘impact.
  • Raise the bar on platform thinking (shared services, paved roads, golden paths), ensuring we build once and reuse broadly.
  • Lead design forums and crossโ€‘functional architecture reviews; drive clarity via ADRs and migration plans that teams can execute.
  • Balance nearโ€‘term delivery with longโ€‘term modernization (domain boundaries, eventโ€‘driven patterns, data mesh where appropriate).
  • Model pragmatism and coachingโ€”unblock delivery teams, simplify where possible, and document patterns others can follow.
  • Drive results and growth.
  • Contribute to measurable operational excellence (availability, latency, quality, resilience, security, cost) tied to business SLAs/SLOs.
  • Guide, encourage, and empower teams around you by leaning into problems and encouraging them to do so too.
  • Contribute to talent growth by mentoring architects/engineers and evolving our EA practices and artifacts.
  • Knowledge of emerging solutions, systems, applications and tech stacks.
  • Respect and promote inclusion & diversity.
Experience Needed
  • 10+ years in software architecture/engineering, with 5+ years leading distributed, highโ€‘scale, lowโ€‘latency systems (Go/Java/Scala, gRPC/REST, Kafka/Pubโ€‘Sub, columnar/NoSQL stores).
  • Designed or led architectures for ad serving and SSP platforms (preferably premium video/CTV), including unified decisioning (direct + programmatic), mediation, forecasting, and yield protections.
  • Working knowledge of header bidding, deal types (OpenRTB, PMP, curated deals), supplyโ€‘path optimization (SPO), and auction transparency.
  • Built or integrated with DSP workflows (planning, activation, bidding, pacing/optimization, frequency management, brand safety, measurement).
  • Practical grasp of identity & addressability (e.g., firstโ€‘party graphs, UID2/PPID concepts, clean rooms), and how buyers/sellers align IDs for targeting and measurement (preferably in CTV).
  • Architected privacyโ€‘centric audience and measurement capabilitiesโ€”data onboarding, audience building/forecasting, reach/frequency, outcomesโ€”using standardized signals and ID interoperability.
  • Kubernetes (multiโ€‘cluster, multiโ€‘region), service mesh, autoscaling, observability (OpenTelemetry), and resiliency engineering; handsโ€‘on with at least one major cloud. Experience with multiโ€‘cloud architecture a plus.
  • Strong security and privacy patterns (OAuth/OIDC, tokenization, encryption, secrets, leastโ€‘privilege, auditability) and FinOps sensibilities.
  • Handsโ€‘on experience with API management and API security standards.
  • Proven track record turning ambiguous business needs into roadmaps, blueprints, and execution plans; excellent communication with senior product leaders, engineering, sales, and clientโ€‘facing teams.
  • Bonus: Experience with live events / live linear ad decisioning, SSAI, or programmatic for live sports/news.
  • Knowledge of curated supply strategies and buyer curation tools is a plus.
  • Bonus: Working experience with AI/ML and analytics platforms.
